Mortal Kombat (2021) Movie • Page 18

  1. Nope. He was always referred to as a new original character by the director.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see him killed off in a film or two and let Liu Kang takeover as the lead.

I'm surprised how many people haven't had issues with the movie creating a boring white male character and making the game's Asian natural lead a supporting character.

I don’t think anyone goes into this expecting a riveting story lol

I wasn’t even expecting a good story and I was still watching it and asking myself what the heck was going on at some parts

You mean Cole? Is he white tho?

But yea, it's a lame creative choice if his purpose for being in the movie is for "we wanted to make a new character to function as a guide into the world of MK for viewers" reasons, which might be the case based on impressions so far. There's dozens of iconic characters in MK canon to choose from but I guess none of them were interesting as Cole Young. ok.

I get why the filmmakers tried something different here since the tournament starts in the next one and Liu Kang's story was already covered in MK 95, but it's a missed opportunity at best if Cole isn't revealed to be Kuai Liang by the end of this and shifted to supporting cast for the upcoming films to become the next Sub Zero after the current one gets killed off and becomes Saibot.

Liu Kang could be an emerging protagonist who takes the lead in the next two films and depending on if the filmmakers try to kill him off like in the games the cast would be more ensemble-based moving forward.

Anywho I guess should go ahead and watch this before diving any deeper into what holds up and what doesn't lol. Not so sure anymore if it's is worth braving a pandemic for a theater experience, but there's still the HBO version if nothing else.

Yeah the actor who plays Cole is half Chinese/half British

The only thing I laughed about in this was how people get the birth mark the same way Tim Allen becomes Santa Clause.

Yea, i don't really get how he could even be white passing lol? Regardless of his ethnicity, the idea of introducing a protagonist who isn't in the games for the purpose of being a window into the world of MK for viewers unfamiliar with the lore or whatever seems like a superfluous creative choice.

I'm guessing they did it to make it easier for a wider audience to get introduced into the MK universe, which I think it sort of accomplishes

The trailer alone blew up the internet before the movie was even released. The game's iconic so the audience was gonna be there regardless. Also couldn't that goal still be accomplished if cole was changed to a character in the games? I'm confused. Not that the movie needed to be a by the book adaptation or anything, it just would've been cool to see something more definitive and true to the source since it's a reboot that seems to put effort into getting so many details right.

The storytelling was just way too disjointed. They didn’t hit the mark on Raiden, Liu Kang, or Cole. Fighting was great in some spots. Reiko fight basically didn’t happen. Goro fighting at a barn/cabin was weird. Pacing was very off. Kano was the best part yet was given an incredibly stupid death.

And don’t get me started on the settings. Outworld and Raiden’s temple basically palette swapped.

The acting was pretty terrible IMO. I was here for fan service and cool fights, and I got it. I hope (if there is a next go around) they make the sets less bland and try to hone more of a story in.

If you need arcana to stand a chance in a fight, what is the point of going out and recruiting new people like Johnny Cage? Is he supposed to have a dragon tattoo? If so, wouldn't Sub Zeo have been hunting him?

Who did Jax kill to get his tattoo? Was it an established character? I don't know anyone past the original trilogy of games.

Definitely liked this more than KvG, but man, this guy really just knew general big plot points of the storyline but could not bring it all together to feel cohesive. Now that Cole is established, next one has to feel like there’s more weight to it and it’s gotta be more about motivation behind Outworld.

Is it explained why Kano doesn't have a cyborg face in this?

Only ever had the laser eye special move which in his storyline was manufactured tech by his mercenary group instead of being a “chi” type superpower. He got it poked out so I’d imagine if Shang Tsung is resurrecting some of his fighters, he’ll come back with the metal plate or something of the like.

They hinted at Noob Saibot as well.
