I'm very optimistic about this one. The cast is pretty frickin great so far.

    Things have changed.

The first movie was terrible and super fun. The second movie was just terrible. Tentatively interested in this.

Totally had no idea this was a thing until today's news from Warner Bros regarding all their films in 2021 going to both HBO Max and theaters at the same time

I think that was what it was before COVID. They put it off indefinitely. I think without a trailer, they aren't putting it out in a month. lol. Would love that tho.

honestly...I don’t think the first one was THAT terrible. I mean it’s def a little hokey, but I thought for a video game movie made in the 90s, it kind of landed the tone of the original MK pretty well

And I thought the casting in the first, at least for Rayden and Lui, was prettt good

    Things have changed.

Casting a white guy to play a Japanese god is inexcusable.

definitely, but as far as 90s casting goes, child me was just happy that Raiden seemed cool as fuck lol. I def wasn’t as educated on movie casting and white washing back then

also lol at my typo with his name.

Serious question because I never followed the mythology close enough to know: is he supposed to be a Japanese god? I always thought, besides his dress, he looked rather....neutral?...in his early designs? (I also haven’t played or looked at the original games in years so could def be very wrong here) I never knew if Raiden was supposed to be of Asian descent or if he was just the god of lightening in their mythology but he was actually from another realm or etc.

I'll just post the wiki entry.

    • Raiden's name and status as a God are taken directly from the Japanese thunder god Raijin.
    • Raiden is one of the earliest instances of a playable God in a fighting game.
    • Raiden's name is spelled Raiden in the arcade iterations of the Mortal Kombat games, and both Deadly Alliance and Deception. On the other home versions and in the Mortal Kombat films, comics. and TV series', his name is spelled Rayden. This was possibly because of copyright issues from a shoot 'em up named Raiden, or to avoid confusion with Raiden from the Fatal Fury series, a large wrestler. The console versions up until Mortal Kombat 4 and the movies changed the name to Rayden. Ed Boon disliked the way that Acclaim changed Raiden's spelling. [2]
    • Raiden's name is written as 雷電 in both Traditional Chinese and Japanese and 雷电 in Simplified Chinese. It's pronounced as "raiden" (phonetically) in Japanese and "léidiàn" (Pinyin) in Mandarin Chinese. This is simply the Chinese word for "thunder and lightning" that was borrowed in Japanese together with the Chinese characters. The first character (雷) in this word means "thunder", the second one (電/电) now mostly means "electricity", or "lightning" in ancient times.
    • Raiden was modeled after the character "Lightning" from the 1986 John Carpenter movie Big Trouble in Little China.
      • Lightning was one of three storms from the movie. Fujin corresponds most with Thunder (they share a suicidal final attack theme), while the purple ninja Rain corresponds to the third storm (also named Rain).

It just looks very samesy to me - and not in any type of improved way. I guess I was hoping for more. I suck.

For sure. I just thought the attempt at the reboot was to elevate the material a bit and mark it a sustainable film series rather than a retread of what we’ve had.
