Monthly Music Catchup

I had this idea today that we could all discuss every month's musical output at the end of each month, instead of looking back at the entire year when we get to December each year.

I'm not sure if this idea is something that will help others out, but maybw this thread can help everyone keep up with new releases easier, and we can suggest albums to each other.

For January, I think my single favorite release was Sampha's debut album, I've been waiting for a solo debut from him for a while and it doesn't disappoint at all.

other January albums that I would give a thumbs up: The xx, SOHN, Japandroids, Cloud Nothings, The Flaming Lips, Bonobo, Kehlani

For January, I really enjoyed Japandroids and Code Orange. I also liked the latest TSOL record, but I need to give it some time. Lastly, it's a February release, but the Dave Hause record is streaming and it's really good.

I was actually impressed with how many quality releases came out this month, I feel like previous years have always had light Januarys

Good idea for a thread, will be interesting to looks back on.

Wasn't the strongest month for me. A lot of stuff I like came out but only 1 I really love and that would be Dryjacket.

    1) Dryjacket
    2) WSTR
    3) Japandroids

I only listened to Japandroids this month (LOVE it), but I plan to check out Cloud Nothings, Oso Oso, and Sinai Vessel. Been hearing those names for a while now and its about time I see what they're all about.

Ok, here are other very cool January releases that I haven't seen mentioned yet:

Ariel Pink x Weyes Blood - Myths 002
CARE - LUV IN THE RUINS
Julie Byrne - Not Even Happiness (cwhit mentioned this but it's still not getting enough love)
Kodie Shane - Big Trouble In Little Jupiter

CARE is great too, even if the record is very bloated and the whole thing isn't really necessary there are some A+ tracks on it

Last January had 3 albums that finished in my top 20 (Chairlift, Daughter, St Lucia)

    Love the thread idea.

Cloud Nothings was easily my favorite this month. Japandroids, P.O.S, and Migos were all good too, but I need to spend more time with each.

That St. Lucia record was a lot of fun. Dancing on Glass was so damn catchy.

    good idea

    - Brian Eno record was ok, but far, far from his best work
    - Max Richter album was excellent (still digesting it)
    - new Code Orange album is meh, which was a huge disappointment
    - that Sinai Vessel album is really good - I did not know them, thus, it was a neat surprise
    - I just can't get into Cloud Nothings for some reason
    - the xx is the blandest shit ever

also, this month I got to see American Football, Pianos Become the Teeth, IIOI, the Hotelier and Title Fight, so it was pretty much one of my favorite musical months ever for that reason

Chief Keef - Two Zero One Seven
    Code Orange - Forever
Kodie Shane - Big Trouble Little Jupiter
    Heat - Overnight
    Nadia Rose - Highly Flammable
    Migos - Culture
Cardi B - Gangsta Bitch Music Vol. 2

Heat was the biggest surprise for me. Having never heard of them before, I really enjoyed their album.
Chief Keef is probably my favorite release of the month.

AFI was probably the release that bummed me out the most. I don't think it's bad at all, but it didn't match up to the two lead singles which I thought were incredibly strong.

The Early November acoustic record is really nice, didn't quite blow me away but it's a really relaxing listen and Ace sounds great. The Dashboard Confessional EP is also a nice little treat that I didn't expect!

Still catching up on some stuff released in January. Just finished listening to Kreator - Gods of Violence. I didn't really follow most of their career, but this is a pretty solid modern thrash record.
