This article has been imported from chorus.fm for discussion. All of the forum rules still apply.

    Billboard:

“MoFi never disclosed this fact, nor did it change its representations to reflect the fact that its records were using DSD,” lawyers for the accuser wrote in a complaint filed Thursday in Chicago federal court. “Instead, MoFi intentionally hid this fact from consumers.”

The lawsuit claims buyers paid extra for the supposedly all-analog vinyl, labeled as either “Original Master Recording” or “Ultradisc One Step” – not only for better sound but also because they’re intrinsically more scarce than recordings that incorporate digital processes.

This is... stupid. Mofi has done so much for HQ vinyl and this whole digital vs analog controversy is using them as an example and just crucifying them. From what I've read into so far, they deserve to keep going and be supported, not attacked and bankrupted.

MoFi puts out insanely high quality products and has been for decades. This isn’t a dealbreaker for me.

I’m not an insane audiophile snob, but they participated in a VERY disingenuous bait and switch marketing ploy to charge the prices that they do for certain ‘high quality’ goods LYING ABOUT THE ONLY THING THESE GOODS WERE BEING PURCHASED FOR.

No one was buying one-steps for the packaging or new liner notes. They were purchasing them because it IN THEORY is the best that record will ever sound.

If you purchased groceries or cosmetics for years because you thought they were of higher quality non-gmo or because you were told they weren’t being used on animals - and you found out that was a lie. You’d be pretty charged up too. Especially when you throw in the fact that these releases cost so much more and that these particular people that’re buying them from you - this is basically their entire personality.

It reminds me of the VW emissions lawsuits from a decade ago. Intentional lies can be costly.

Do I want them to be bankrupted? Not at all.
Do they need to be ~punished~? Absolutely.

It’s also INSANE to me that this was all started by the asshole record shop owner that I see a couple times a month.
