Remember when they were gonna release an album “as soon as their label would let them” after they released their last one five years ago?
Pretty sure this album was my introduction to “indie rock” as a concept, I was like 11-12 years old. I remember trying to learn how to play guitar right around the same time (didn’t last long) but thinking it was really cool that I could play the intro of 3rd planet. This story probably isn’t useful to you, but it’s a good memory that I think of whenever I hear this album.
I forgot it wasn’t on Spotify for a long time. Lot of memories with that record during the summer of ‘11. It was actually the last major MM record for me to discover. That bassline in Tiny Cities is so good. Definitely need to re visit soon, and I’m excited for your retro.
Modest Mouse's 'The Moon & Antarctica' Turns 20 my first and favorite MM album. I was 15 when I first heard it, I got a CD from an FYE (lol). it was in the middle of a hot Florida summer and I remember closing my door and laying on my bed and getting lost in it
So this thing's officially 20 years old huh TM&A was kind of the only thing I listened to my first summer out of high school (2010). I had a shit job doing construction demolition with my best friend at the time and we'd spend most of the day slacking off and sneaking outside for smoke breaks. Don't know why but for some reason we'd both gotten super into the record at the same time a few months earlier. Recalling that feels like remembering someone else's life now, wow. "If you could be anything you want I bet you'd be disappointed--am I right?" I don't really have much profound to say about this record that couldn't be said better by someone else. I'm glad it exists, I'm glad that many years later I still don't think I entirely understand what some of the songs are about, I'm grateful for that part where the drums first come in on "Stars Are Projectors" (you know the part) and "Lonesome Crowded West" might somehow still be better, sorry.
lcw is their best record and its not even close. i'm sorry to be a damper but i really dont understand moon & antartica. i'm glad you guys like it but i never vibed.
I got really, really into this record during the winter and spring of my freshman year of college (so, 10 years ago) and had a big Modest Mouse phase. Weirdly, I have not listened to it much at all since then.
Moon and Antarctica is their best record. Modest Mouse is still one of my favorite bands and probably twice a year I get on a MM kick.
I don't think TLCW is better but I do think it's incredible and another one of my favorite records ever
I like this take but I gotta say "We Were Dead" is also very very good and sometimes I like it more than "Good News" yes I know I'm probably alone in that
the highs are higher but there are some real duds on it i also totally forgot about it in the prior post but i love the no ones first EP
honestly not big on most of Good News but We Were Dead is excellent Strangers has 9 good songs and the rest I’d be fine never hearing again
