Well, they've been on tour already for a month and there was nothing new. I'm just happy to see they're coming to Northeast Ohio twice in the span of 4 months after not coming here for 11 years.
it's Modest Mouse we're talking about haha we're still at least 2 yrs out and that's me probably being too optimistic i would love to be wrong about it tho
never forget “it’ll be released as quickly as it’s legally allowed to be” i would love new modest mouse obviously but not getting my hopes up for it anytime soon.
yeah this is all operating under the assumption that a) the album they wanted to follow up with was actually done when they said it was done, b) that's still the album they're putting out. but I can imagine Isaac starting from scratch which is frustrating
listening to We Were Dead for the first time in a long while, and it's kind of frustrating. I like, and there's a lot to like, but there's also so much that implies places that could've been so much more. like, there's lot of moments that feels like a band who read what Modest Mouse was known for and made music based on that. the cool rhythms are kind of there as straight forward syncopation, but what made their rhythms so cool before were the complete changes that contrasted but still went nicely. less variation than they're capable of, part of which is just a byproduct of shorter songs. I feel this way melodically at times as well, where sometimes Isaac will be going somewhere intriguing with his vocals, but he interrupts it with a Tom Waits impression or something. there are good and even great songs here but where they over rely on things they're known for makes it feel uninspired at times. it's a weird coexistence. I do like it though
lead guitar melodies and riffs on point a lot though edit:some vocal harmonies sound like moments outta fall out boy songs. this isn't a negative or a positive.
I revisited it a few days ago and was surprised by how much more I liked it than I used to. I also really love Long Drive now too, which took forever to really click with me.
I always say - and I know I'm in the minority - but We Were Dead is my favorite MM record. Spitting Venom, Parting of the Sensory and Little Motel are three of my all-time favorite MM songs and I pretty much love all the rest as well.
these are all my favorites from the album as well. I'd round it out with dashboard and Florida this is fair. for all the stuff I said, I will always admire that they're the indie band from that era/class that seems to be taking the most risks with their songwriting still. not to say anyone else is slacking, just that MM is always trying to reach forward
MM is my favorite band but I'm still struggling to enjoy Strangers... kinda upsets me that I don't love it. Only album I would put Strangers above is Long Drive... sorry people I'm not a fan of instrumentals.
STO is probably my least favorite but still some great tracks: Sugar Boats, The Ground Walks, Coyotes, The Best Room, Shit in your Cut, Ansel, Lampshades. Hell, I even really like God is an Indian.
I will never understand why that record is so polarizing, the only bad song on it is "Wicked Campaign." It's a little all over the place, but what Modest Mouse album isn't? Its not their best but it's still a super fun record. Actually, I think I'll spin it tonight.
i bought tickets to the albany(!) and bethlehem dates for me for my birthday and am currently resisting getting a ticket for the syracuse date and/or new london date. these past few years of tours have been pretty nice.
Listening to Strangers right now. "The Ground Walks With Time in a Box" is like an amalgamation of three pre-existing Modest Mouse songs, but also such an all-timer. The heavy-ass intro to the bridge with the fucking elephant noises is too much and "Coyotes" is still so delightful, especially paired with the music video
"Sugar Boats" is such a rager, good lord, always reminds me of the nightmarish boat ride from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory "Wicked Campaign" is just so bland, sounds like the most forgettable kind of Killers song
I don’t dislike STO but there are some things about it that severely holds it back for me. Not a huge fan of some of the production choices on it.
