same here. a full ranking of everything would be pretty all over the place. ive been deeply hooked on all their little side releases lately. every day before my 4:30 am shift ive had the night on the sun ep on repeat
I love WWD! It's just that Modest Mouse is one of those bands where I still love their worst album. The only other bands I feel the same way about, where there is no bad album, are Manchester Orchestra, PUP, Brand New, and Weatherbox.
modest mouse are very much not one of those bands for me tbh haha, the golden casket is a brutally difficult album for me to meet on its own terms, although i do like it a little bit more than i used to it is still a major swing and a miss for me lol. i also find strangers pretty inconsistent although it has a lot of songs i like a lot i get you thougy, i do have bands like that. erra is prob the biggest example for me, they just put out their worst album and it is a solid 7/10 i do think wwd is a big display of all their post m&a strengths with an even more consistent tracklist rhan some of the early albums. idk, they made something particularly special with that one
I like We Were Dead more than The Lonesome Crowded West And some days, I like This is a Long Drive... more than either of them
Since I'm reading people's opinions and they aren't getting completely crucified for not liking newer material, I'm encouraged to also share. I used to absolutely adore this band. Seen them live atleast 10 times in last 20 years. Still enjoy the majority of their records and would consider them a top 20 band for me. With that being said, I started to lose interest once Strangers to Ourselves came out. Was so pumped for the album and loved the Lampshades single the moment it dropped. Sadly that album really disappointed me. Then Golden Gasket came out and I still dont think I've gotten through entire album.
there are songs on strangers where it comes together, i think the ground walks + coyotes combo is as good as they ever were, and even golden casket has wooden soldiers, we're lucky and back to the middle which are all great, but yeah neither album really meet the standard for me i do think the new album has a fair shot to off of at least dragon and third side though
Both good records imo. Strangers feels like a mixtape and could use some editing/resequencing, but there are some all-timers on there, and Golden Casket has its own vision start to finish.
strangers is at the bottom for me, but it does have some incredible songs. ground walks is one of their best
ground walks is such a propulsive blast of fun. i also really like the best room off that i feel like the golden casket is either a you can dig what its going for or you dont album but i respect it more than i used to for sure. undeniably an ambitious shakeup
I don't see a big difference between Strangers and Golden Casket. For one specific example, there's not a whole lot of difference between the main groove of Ground Walks and We Are Between. Both rock.
i just dont like the hook on we are between very much haha, def dont think they meet the same standard in that regard
Strangers feels more safe by MM standards for sure, a lot of the hits on there follow a pretty typical sound for them. Golden Casket is definitely poppier, weirder, and more cohesive as a whole, so you either buy into it or you don't (I do). I like "We Are Between" more than "Lampshades," but not as much as "Ground Walks."
I gave Golden Casket a spin on my early morning walk. First time revisiting it in 3 years. Still dont love it, its mid. My least favorite MM album.
i think my favorite song between the two albums is wooden soldiers, thats a song thats pretty emblematic of what the vision for the golden casket is in a very successful way. where a lot of the other songs i dig on that album are the ones without the bells and whistles, thats one that wears them like a glove
The Golden Casket is more cohesive then Strangers to Ourselves and has some great songs like Wooden Soldiers and Japanese Trees but overall kinda drags at times. I enjoyed relistening for the first time in a while but it would probably be last in my rankings.
As a whole, I like it more than Strangers, but Strangers has higher highs (and lower lows). "Ground Walks," "Wooden Soldiers," and "We're Lucky" are all great MM songs
There are so many songs on Strangers To Ourselves that make me go "hell yeah" and maybe only 1-2 that do that on The Golden Casket. Honestly, I think "Strangers To Ourselves," "Of Course We Know," and "The Tortoise And The Tourist" are only (full) songs I'd personally put below the 3-4 best songs on The Golden Casket. The writing, performances, and overall execution are just so much tighter and confident on Strangers To Ourselves, and I think it makes the individual songs and overall collection better than what we got on The Golden Casket.
listening to strangers now and man this has some heaters, lampshades, shit in your cut, the ground walks, the tortoise and the best room
I just popped STO on and yea, some good tracks for sure. Better than Golden Casket. Ground Walks, Tortoise, Lampshades, Sugar Boats, Shit In Your Cut, Be Brave. Actually had more good songs than I recalled. Would still rank it second to last though in their discography.
