It's certainly funny We Were Dead was ever considered their worst but their first four records were really just that great. Johnny Marr really fleshed out the guitar arrangements on that record and the band playing with horns/additional percussion is something I really miss.
i would never have considered we were dead that tbh, think it is a healthy raise on good news although that album is still good too
Granted I'm not in tune to the larger MM community but I've never heard that about We Were Dead. I thought it was pretty highly praised when it came out and a lot of songs got airtime from that album
the only reason i had any dislike for we were dead when it came out was because of the james mercer features. i don't remember why but i was really burnt out on him. i'm going to need to revisit the last two albums because it's been so long since i listened & i barely remember whats on there.
I was pretty deep in the fan community back in the day. Used to post a lot to the original fan message boards Interstate 8. Basically a lot of people complained it leaned even more into radio friendly stuff (which Good News already got hate for).
Yeah I didn’t know that We Were Dead got hate from fans. I thought the consensus was that is was great. I also didn’t realize Good News got hate either? I was under the impression that it was one of those rare albums that was way more polished and managed not to alienate fans of the pre-major label stuff
Cautiously optimistic about the new album. Wasn't a fan of The Golden Casket but have loved everything else. One of the singles is meh, the other is good.
Quite enjoying this new tune - I havent actually heard any of the live versions of new tracks. To look em up or go in blind? Re: We Were Dead - by far my favourite MM record. Excels through good headphones and just always feels vast and expansive on every listen. I love that shit.
I never saw We Were Dead get a ton of hate so much as lukewarm reactions from some fans, at least until Strangers came around and there seemed to be a new consensus least-favorite lol. I wouldn't take We Were Dead over Good News as a whole, but it probably has higher highs, and they're neck and neck. Depends on my mood. Good News is lighter and more airy, We Were Dead is darker with higher-energy.
the Tom Waits type stuff on Good News is extremely Not My Shit, especially Dance Hall which I truly hate, but can't complain too much about an album with a top 20 all time song like World at Large
I’ll have to revisit We Were Dead, never really clicked for me outside of a handful of songs but you guys are really hyping it up
