song about nothing popped a lot in the whip lol, probably the highlight of the back half besides the closer for me now
This might actually be my least favorite of theirs atm but it's still like a 7.5 so I'm certainly not mad about it. They don't really miss!
damn, i do have bands like that so i get it. new erra type beat this prob goes in the lower middle for me around where good news is, they check off similar boxes for me
I like this substantially more than The Golden Casket, an album I thought was okay on first listen and truly did not stick with me at all in any way in the long run. Hoping this fares better and if it does (I think it will) it will probably surpass PTO but it’s not gonna touch anything else in their discography. But they’re a great band so that’s not bad at all.
I didn’t know that was the case. I thought the song was odd and its placement right after a similar interlude-type song was weird, but considering the context, that’s a really nice inclusion
Still haven't had a chance to listen to this but very excited based on the reports in here. Also curious, where do you think the band's peak era ends? Some would say after Moon and Antarctica but they are wrong. More would say after Good News. I personally would count We Were Dead as part of their peak, album is killer.
Good News is the end of their peak imo but We Were Dead and This is a Long Drive are both just outside of that range. Great records
It is crazy to think how radically different even just production-wise TLCW, TM&A, and Good News all are
Yeah as a teenager getting into the band I couldn't really wrap my mind around it having started with Good News and We Were Dead. TMA and LCW both sounded so much less polished but not lo-fi.
id say the best albums are the first three myself, i like good news and we were dead a lot but ive never been able to put them on that level myself. this is probably in that tier for me though which is really impressive for them at this point. i put pretty few albums on that pedestal though, if i was the age i am now back then they'd have prolly been my favorite band long drive is the one i listen to the most these days weirdly although i do think tlcw and moon are more fully realized than it
LCW - MA - Good News is their peak with long drive and we were dead being just outside of it on either side.
I've never understood what it is that people don't necessarily like about We Were Dead. It always seems to be dismissed from the great MM albums whenever these discussions occur. I've always considered Lonesome ---> We Were Dead to be their peak run.
1. Picking Dragon's Pockets - My favorite off the album. Beats' lyrics are fantastic and relatable in this crazy, biased left vs right, fake news BS social media world we live in. I AM THE PILOT! Gotdamnit! 2. Remember Yourself - I like it, a little slow for my taste but enjoying it more with each listen. 3. Life's A Dream - Love the funky classic MM type beat, but the lyrics leave something to be desired. It's just ok for me. 4. Third Side of The Moon - What's not to love. Sounds like it came from Good News or We Were Dead! 5. Dogbed In Heaven/Give It a Skeleton - Boring AF, not for me. I like the second half better. 6. Interlude - IDGAF, pointless. 7. I Can't Talk Right Now - I like it somewhat, but only because, I too have trouble talking while grocery shopping, just stand there standing in front of 1 shelf like a moron until I get off the phone. lol. 8. Speak & Spell - THIS is what we've been waiting for! Easily one of the standout tracks! Probably would have gotten radio play in the early aughts! 9. Rotten Fruit -Hey look we're Imagine Dragons, JK. Song is mid. I like that it gets weird sonically but it never really goes anywhere. 10. Knocked Down By Waves - This is just me & my wife at the end of the night, watching my toddler, whom we thought was almost asleep, pop up off the couch and dump out the bin of figurines after we cleaned up the house for what we thought was the last time that night. Defeated. The Song is absolutely necessary, never IMO. 11. Absolutely Necessary Never - Another standout track. I think this one will continue to grow over time. 12. Song About Nothing - This is just "Dance Hall" again right?! lol. I actually enjoy this 100X more than Dance Hall, but basically the same concept. 13. Stoner Party - I get why it's here, but I don't need it. Will skip. 14. Look How Far... - Great MM Single! 15. Impossible Somedays - Great closer. One of the strongest songs on the album, still leaves something to be desired. Pretty underwhelmed overall. The singles really had me hyped, but there's not a ton to love apart from them. Hoping the album grows on me, but I'm already getting kind of bored of it. Strangers and TGC had better highs. Honestly, enjoying DCFC - I Built A Tower more.
As a caveat to my earlier post, while I am much warmer on this than the last record and even STO for the most part, I still think WWD is quite a ways above it in terms of musicianship and quality.
Very few bands actually maintain their level of innovation forever and I've never understood the collective pretending that artists who made incredible works 20 years ago are still doing so 20 years later. Art should be evaluated against the rest of the field not just past catalog and most ppl just settle into a sound. MM made some of the best records of the 90s and probably the single best rock album of the 21st century. Then they got steady then they got alright. It's ok. Other bands carried on the torch! I like the production on this more than their last two records. Probably won't return but glad Isaac is still doing his thing. Last great MM record was Sharpen Your Teeth ;)
the more i have listened to this the more the things i wasnt sold on have grown on me tbh dogbed is pretty easily a highlight for me here though, if not the highlight
yeah its a really great middle point between that album and the lessons theyve learned since then, and it pairs super well with third side since that one is kind of the moon and antarctica equivalence of that kinda aching to hear the shadow of a shade thing lol, almost wish they just made this a double album
Listened to We Were Dead for the first time in forever today and yeah that’s a good one. Might like it better than Good News if I’m being honest. Also ended the listen buying a ticket to see them in October, it’s been too long.
