Rotten Fruit, Knocked Down By Waves, Absolutely Necessary Never and Stoner Party give me the big meh but my god the run of the first 8 tunes is very great! Speak N Spell is wonderful, as is Impossible Somedays. This will get a lot of spins!
"I Can't Talk Right Now" is really, really good. Pitchfork's main complaint with this seems to be that the instrumentation is "generic," but I have to disagree -the guitar-centric stuff feels right in their wheelhouse without retreading the "Dashboard"/"Lampshades"/"We Are Between" riffs for the umpteenth time and the electronic stuff, regardless of how successful, is a fresh direction for them. After losing Jeremiah, I'm not surprised to hear some experimentation and potential lack of identity here, especially with the rotating cast of musicians that played on it. Based on that interview, it sounds like Isaac wrote around parts that were brought to him by collaborators half the time.
yea, seems everyone loves this, wish I felt the same way after first listen. Still may take a few listens. Singles are best, but again, those took a few listens. Happy everyone it!
yeah I'm hoping I have a similar experience to them eventually but that first listen was pretty rough
"Impossible Somedays" is a nice closer. On second listen, I think "Rotten Fruit" and "Knocked Down by Waves" are the two misses. The "Interlude" is kind of pointless, but doesn't hurt anything. (I would keep "Stoner Party" just to have Jeremiah on the record.) "Absolutely Necessary Never" and "Look How Far..." are just fun.
