I like this album for the most part, there are some great songs, some okay songs, and some songs that are just eh. I like Brendan's half better than Jake's but Brendan's is way to short. My favorite songs are The Wedding Singer, Mass, Hiding, Apple Cider, and Just Another Face
I know this isn't a unique sentiment, but as someone who severely dislikes this bands back-catalog, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. The vocals are still a bit hard to swallow at times, but for the most part this is a solid album I can see myself returning to periodically in the future. Wedding Singer and Note To Self are probably my favorites.
The one thing I don't really hear is the improvement in vocals some people have been mentioning. I know they're probably the hardest part of the band to get used to, but I listened to YGMIA right after Holy Ghost today and noticed almost no difference.
Listening to Brendan's half while reading the lyrics was a great experience. The way the second verse of Breathing in Stereo references the first verse is so great, it's a small moment but it's so characteristic of his style. Also the delivery of "IT'S THE SAME. DAMN. THING. EVERY NIGHT" is so perfect. I love this album guys
Probably repeating people here but loving this a lot more over time. Thought their old stuff was annoying but this is a lot lot better. Just Another Face is definitely one of the songs of the year, the vocals are so good
Finally got my vinyl in, giving it a listen now. Had no idea there was a bonus track, super excited to hear it!
It's kinda crazy for me how much better the first half is than the second which I find to just be super blah
Like, I don't think the second half is bad, it just doesn't do anything for me. It just sorta all blends together and everytime I've listened to it I get surprised when it's over because it's so short and just goes nowhere. And the first half, I just think is amazing. Wedding Singer and Mass (especially Mass) are just SO good.
You're totally right about it going nowhere. I'm fairly indifferent on the first half too tbh, but I think it's easily the better half.
Never really given them much time, but I just finished my first listen and really enjoy it. Recs on their back catalog?
Just go backwards I guess, though it's unpredictable whether you'll like their first two albums. This one's a big step up and I think it's alright even though I hated the first two.
This has grown on me hugely in the last few days, the melodies have become imbedded in my brain. Think I prefer Jake's side, but only marginally.
I was finally able to compile my thoughts into a review. I'm so into this album. Modern Baseball Hits a Home Run with Holy Ghost - Turnative
they're going to have a hotline on their upcoming tour with Joyce Manor where you can text their tour manager directly if you feel uncomfortable for any reason. such an awesome idea.
Really hope people take this seriously, could really help people. Regardless it's a gesture showing that they're listening and that's great
First night of tour is today. Excited to see what HG cuts are played. Albums been a big grower. I just can't do this band before 4pm but once it starts getting dark everything clicks.
