That's what really makes his half so impressive to me and why I'm excited to see what they've got next. For writing these lyrics in a week, he did an amazing job. "Too early to see if I’ll be Seeking out the fraud in me With compassion and honesty, I’ll wait…." One of my favorite lines on the album from What If...
Definitely don't feel like Brendan's half is half-baked at all. Flows really well and all of the songs are memorable.
Neither do I, like I said, it's a big step up from what they've done previously - although this record doesn't really make me love this band, though. With that being said, the album is very short and I very much dislike very short albums on principle alone.
I don't even really have an issue with the lyrics. Only song on his half that I don't care for is What If. Coding and Breathing are good songs that feel like they're missing something.
Actually not so big on this so far. Hoping it grows on me, but I can already tell it doesn't come close to YGMIA, which was absolutely perfect.
I disliked YGMIA because I thought the soft and slow songs on that record were really, really terrible. The few slow songs on Holy Ghost are pretty bad too, but not as bad as those on YGMIA.
Which songs are those? All I can think of are "Tommy Bowers" and "Pothole," both of which are integral to that album's sequencing and the latter of which is one of the best songs this band has written
Timmy Bowers is a skip for me always, and Going To Bed Now would be waaaay better with different lyrics. I like every Jake song on here more than Pothole. Always preferred Sports to YGMIA haha.
I think YGMIA is great through Apartment, then it falls off a bit for me in the middle and comes back around Charlie Black, then basically ends after Your Graduation.
Haven't kept up with what everyone else is saying about this record, but after a couple of listens through, I might go as far as saying it's one of my favourite records of the year. Probably my favourite MOBO record. Just Another Face is a powerful closer.
I would have considered myself a casual fan at best prior to Holy Ghost, but this album is hitting me hard. Dig the whole album but I've been playing Wedding Singer, Hiding, Breathing in Stereo, Apple Cider, and Just Another Face on repeat.
I don't know. I'm just not seeing it with this album. I feel like other bands and artists, even from this scene have written about their mental illness with more perspective and insight than Modern Baseball does here. The lyrics are for the most part pretty trite, the melodies are much weaker to me on here than they were on You're Gonna Miss It All's best songs (The Spins, Your Graduation) and the music still isn't that interesting to me. I wish i liked it more than I do.
I know this is a long shot, but is anyone here heading from Long Island to the Album release show tomorrow. Im the only one I know that managed to get tickets and I'm not trying to do a 2.5 hour drive alone. Im totally willing to drive, and I don't really care about gas money. I just really want the company.
Loving this album but I just want more. None of the songs feel like they were cut off too early but they also often feel like they could have been expanded. I understand that's a presumptuous/entitled viewpoint to take, I just really love the songs/band. That said, this one is really getting to me. This band really knows how to cut the listener to the core. Glad they've been able to put out yet another great record. There's a spot in my year-end top ten for this one, guaranteed.
