One of most shocking finishes ive ever seen! An immediate rematch after getting brutally KO'd is a terrible idea for Usman. Wait atleast 6months, recover fully and take a title shot on his return.
“Immediate” isn’t meant to be taken literally. Haha. It doesn’t mean rush him back into the cage ASAP, it just means that he won’t have to earn another shot and no one will get a shot before him, most likely.
Bill Simmons is on the Ringer MMA Show and asking about the altitude. As a basketball fan how the hell does he not know about the altitude in Utah?!
Was kind of a side note in the Dana conference but Tony is fighting at WW on the Diaz card (in the co-main I believe)
Yeah that card is super weak. You’d figure they’d want to stack it more to build Chimaev, but I guess they want to fuck over Diaz more lol
I think its better for Usman to just sit it out, let Chimaev take the next shot (asuming he beats Diaz) and fight the winner after.
Card was much better than anticipated. Where I had counted Rockhold out, he actually really went out on his shield and was hitting Costa hard than Romero did. Props to him for knowing when to call it. What a perfect setup Edwards thew. He’d had all the momentum sucked out of him after the second and it looked like Kamaru was really gonna get to toe stomp his way to another victory. Feinted the jab, feinted the straight, perfect kick setup. Literally as perfect as Usman’s KO of Masvidal. Gotta love it.
I do think Rockhold might have gotten a little bit of durability back from taking a few years off. He definitely went out there and gave it his all, so props for that lol. His retirement sort of reminded me of Tim Kennedy's where he talked about how he just felt old and slow for the first time when fighting Gastelum so he said "Yeah, that's gotta be it."
Dana seemed pretty sold on doing the trilogy as soon as they can somewhere in the UK, he mentioned Wembley, that would be incredible.
He was also super critical of Merab's performance over Jose. Flat out saying that fight isn't gonna put him closer to a title shot in that division.
Yeah, that doesn't surprise me. Dana seems like he gets the most irritated with fighters who are in the title eliminator position and play it safe instead of "making a statement". Rakic was supposed to get a title shot with a win over Santos and then they said "ehhh pass" lol. Don't get me wrong, the fight last night was super boring, but a win over Aldo is still top notch any way you can get it done.
Usman has been pretty gracious in defeat, but I still thought it was odd to call that kick a Hail Mary. It wasn't like a Yair vs. Korean Zombie scenario. haha. They clearly saw that tendency from Usman to exploit and got it done with a pretty textbook move there. Leon also gave him feint with the left hand which Usman tried to parry and never even saw the kick coming.
You know Cormier was having flashbacks as soon as it happened hahaha, I don't think he brought up that KO at all though.
I know most of us called Leon winning (or at least giving him some problems) last week, but I'm sort of proud of this post from January. haha.
Reminds me of when everyone thought Masvidal got lucky against Askren when he was actually drilling high knees all camp.
Tony and now Holland added to the Diaz card. still not good but slightly better could use one more solid main card fight
