I mean, the timing is a little funny, but I honestly do not understand why everyone is making a big deal about it. It’s not like Mighty Mouse is complaining about the stoppage or that he would change his mind about that rule now.

He also didn’t try to keep himself safe by playing that game of “is he safe or not” which was his main complaint about that rule/situation. He was mainly rocked from a flush right hand anyway so...I don’t know. It feels like people are trying to “get him” for something but I just don’t see it. The rule still sucks and it allows people to play the game and stall. It’s not Aljo’s fault.

It’s just hilariously ironic to me because I hadn’t heard much about DJ at all in the past year, but definitely saw at least 3 interviews come up about the subject lol.

  3. wonder if ONE is gonna allow punches behind the ear/the head now that Eddie’s been dq’d for it.

where do they decide to draw the line?

Or they could just make kneeing a downed opponent illegal. It is in the UFC for a reason. I do understand the frustration of fighters exploiting that rule, and it sucks when that happens, but you can literally crack someone’s skull or permanently damage the brain with that strike. The force of a head kick when standing is generally impeded by the distance of travel for the leg as well as the opponent’s body being able to move with the hit. A stationary, downed opponent is held in place by their own weight and the generated force from a knee to the head is like 10x’s more impactful than most head kicks standing up.

I don't necessarily disagree, but I think they need to revisit what qualifies as a downed opponent if they are going to keep that rule. Aljo's situation is frustrating specifically because a guy can sort of have control when they are "downed" even though they should be at a disadvantage there. In a situation where a guy would normally be open to a legitimate attack (knee to a mostly upright opponent), the pressure now falls to the person in Yan's position to adjust or at least not throw an ill-timed strike.

Yan/Aljo's situation is obviously a no-brainer because the ref clearly told Yan not to throw as a preemptive measure to avoid a DQ situation... but a lot of guys will play the game of keeping one hand down on the mat and then pick it up. I feel like that is a really stupid and unnecessary thing to let happen and the fighters shouldn't have to worry about that. If a guy has one finger on the mat but is otherwise standing up, that knee is not going to be any more dangerous than if they lifted their hand two inches off the mat. You just end up with anti-climactic fight endings like Mousasi vs. Weidman. They tried to change this by requiring both hands be on the mat to become a grounded opponent but....that's still not something the fighter should be looking at in the heat of the moment.

100% agree and that’s why I call it super frustrating to see fighters exploit a rule because it just causes doubt about the rule and it’s legitimacy, when it’s in place to protect the fighters. I 100% believe the rule should be based on having a knee down. Your hips are no longer engaged in your movement and you’re a stationary target.

The face-off made me cringe. Holland called him “a meathead who learned how to fight” and I think that’s pretty accurate.
