Pretty boring card. Almost everyone at the party I was at last night fell asleep during Aldo/Edgar. On the surface, Brock/Hunt was real boring, but I thought it was the best fight on the card. Maybe it was because I was the most interested in it, but I thought the takedown vs. punch mental game made it exciting. The Women's Bantamweight Division is kind of a joke. Rousey was dominant in the division for a reason and the fact that everyone that has held the title since her has yet to retain it is real sad. All it does is make Rousey look like the best fighter in a weak division and that the Holm fight was a fluke. Not good.

Yeah it is unfortunate. The whole top 5 or so are really talented but they all have a gaping hole in one aspect of the game. With Joanna, she is an expert and specialist in the striking but she is also more than competent in the other areas so no one is strictly a "bad match up" for her and no obvious gameplan is there.

All of the bantamweights are specialists but are not too great in the other areas and can be exposed by some one else in the top 5. Rousey and Miesha's striking, Cat and Holly's grappling, etc. reminds me of the men's divisions back in the day.

It takes a while for talent to develop. Women's MMA should be in a really good place in 5 years time.

Not only that, but divisions just fluctuate. Lightweight doesn't have an exciting obvious number one contender but everyone in the top 15 has a legitimate shot at being champion while heavyweight and bantamweight are already to the point of recycling match ups because everyone has beaten each other already. Flyweight and Light Heavyweight are looking pretty bare because of lack of competition for the champions while Welterweight and Middleweight have tons of possible match ups. You just never know how it'll look each year.

Cyborg would sweep any of those women in the Bantamweight division should they choose to size up.

But, but, but...I thought Dana said MMAFighting and Ariel were just lying?

No but really. I'm excited to see how things shake up. I kind of figured UFC 200 was Zuffa's last big hurrah.

He sucks. I hope Bellator/UFC let him go and never let him come back.

I've done both and, to be fair, with the light gloves and the necessary posture, it's pretty hard to look super good in stand up in MMA. Unless you're someone like BJ Penn.

Really? I don't know how you can be unimpressed with Cormier.

His wins over Bigfoot and Barnett during the Strikeforce Grand Prix were two of the most impressive performances I've ever seen. I only wish he could have stayed at heavyweight. He's much more impressive at that weight.

Your buddy is a dummy. Aldo was the obvious pick. Only two I missed on for this card were Gomi and Hendricks. I was really pulling for both.

^I'm tired of hearing people complain about Cormier being unimpressive in that short-notice fight. If you haven't realized yet, it's a no-win situation for the person taking the late replacement.

It's always that the person staying in the fight is SUPPOSED to win (they've had a full camp, blah blah blah) while the person stepping in is the one "on short notice". Cormier and Jones both recently had late replacements in their last fights, dominated their opponents, got 10-8 rounds, and both got criticized for being "boring" and "safe" even though they didn't have to take the fight in the first place.

Tony Ferguson won a late-replacement fight, put on an AMAZING show, and he still gets complaints that he should have dominated his guy. However, Rockhold and McGregor accepted late replacements in their last fights and tried to put on a show and lost. They're criticized for losing to an opponent who "wasn't prepared" (as if THEY were).

People are going to complain no matter what you do. You go out and decimate your opponent, and people will say that you SHOULD have done that and that the other fighter was unprepared. There's no situation where you gain anything out of it.

On short notice, that was the only way that fight was going to go down.

Silva was always going to give DC trouble in a stand up fight. DC was always going to try and smother him and win via points. He had nothing to gain from standing toe-to-toe with Silva and everything to lose (both reputation wise and financially because of the win bonus).

I think he openly acknowledged that in the post fight interview. He repeatedly said that he did "what he had to do." People bored with that fight should be pissed at Jon Jones and not DC. Jon Jones is the reason we had that boring ass fight.

Exactly. I'll admit, I was mad watching the fight because it was boring, but I mean, if he would have smashed Anderson, no one would have been happy anyways because Anderson was "unprepared".

Cormier is a good fighter, but he's not impressive to me. Tbh, I made my post earlier with the mindset that with Silva's age, lighter weight, and little time to prep, it's a much easier fight than Jones for him. Yet he still kind of laid on him most of the fight and didn't really have any impressive connections. And it's not his only fight that's been boring.

To be honest, I hadn't read your post and wasn't addressing you at all haha. Perhaps the person I quoted was, but that wasn't my intent. So the boring comment was addressed to the general criticisms I had seen online and not anything you had said.

But, specifically addressing this post, I think DC's current run speaks for itself. He beat Rumble pretty convincingly, who I think has shown himself to be a great fighter. He also looked good in his one title defense. So I would say he has impressed me at this point.

As for the Silva fight, I think it is probably best to not try and look at it critically, or better yet just pretend it didn't happen. Silva had 48 hours notice, is obviously an entirely different fighter than Jon Jones, and the stakes for the fight were entirely removed. In no universe was that fight going to impress me. Even if DC has just walked into the ring and punched Silva out with one punch, I wouldn't have been impressed. That fight never should have happened, but in order to get DC paid, they just kind of went through the motions.

I will say that Cormier's strength has looked very disappointing at LHW.

Does anyone remember him lifting up Barnett, Silva, and Mir, all who are 250+, effortlessly above his head and throwing them like rag dolls?

  22. Mrk_Brdshw

    Dusted Groove

He lifted up Gus and Jon the same way? And I know they're smaller, but he effortlessly picked up Silva and literally THREW Dan Henderson.

I guess I don't really get it. Aside from the Jones fight, I don't think the guy has lost a round unless he lost that first one to Rumble.

He def lifted Gus and slammed him down. He also lifted Rumble, the slam was not as emphatic, but it was still a pretty impressive show of strength.

Color me shocked. I bet it's something strange though because he said within that month or so that he was booked for that fight, he was tested about 5 times.
