I keep laughing at how ridiculous it was that Popeyes half-jokingly sponsored Lewis in this fight. They didn’t do anything for his last fight but then decides to sponsor him against DC....the guy who made a pretty popular video about his love for Popeyes and is also from Louisiana. Hilarious but also a stab in the back.
I'm not sure if anyone at 170 (aside from Tyron) could avoid being put on their back for 3/5 rounds. Maia seems to do well with wrestlers a decent chunk of the time, but people have seemed to have figured him out recently. RDA is probably too small. Usman could do fairly well. I would be interested in seeing Wonderboy vs. Askren just because Wonderboy has awesome footwork and would not fear Askren's striking whatsoever.
This was the fight I was hoping for given Thompson doesn't really seem to need a rematch with anyone ranked near him at the moment. Plus Askren had him on his death list, but it seems the fearless Lawler was the only one willing to answer the call.
Some potentially exciting match ups i'm hoping for in the coming months: Adesanya vs Costa Namajunas vs Andrade Woodley vs Covington Tony Ferg vs whoever
I'm weirdly excited for Askren/Lawler even though it probably won't be pretty. Lawler will fight his ass off regardless. Izzy/Costa would be FUN as fuck. Izzy/Jacare would also be pretty dope. Hopefully they can get one of those fights on the Aussie card. Maybe to co-main under Whittaker/Gastelum
I'm definitely excited for those, I should've clarified better I was listing off potential matches as opposed to finalized ones. Whittaker vs Gastelum is excellent. Usman vs Dos Anjos is excellent. Valentina vs Joanna is excellent. Souza should most definitely be facing the winner of Whittaker/Gastelum and Izzy needs to move up the rankings before he gets a shot imho. But what are rankings in the UFC these days anyways? I haven't decided on whether or not i'm excited to see Jones back. Too many second chances but he's also undeniably the best Light Heavyweight fighter we've ever seen.
I would love to see Jacare get a title shot but I would not at all be surprised to see him get passed up (yet again) by Israel since he has somewhat recent losses to both Whittaker and Gastelum. Although it would be a little weird to give Israel a title shot after KOing Brunson who Jacare has also KOed recently. It's almost insane that the guy is that good and has never fought for the title especially when 2 of his 3 losses in the UFC could have easily went in his favor.
Globo is reporting that Dillashaw vs Cejudo and Cruz vs Lineker are in the works for UFC 233. And the UFC will close down the flyweight division in 2019
That makes so much more sense now. He thought he was going to get paid millions to spar some chump in front of a bunch of rich people and they duped him into jumping onto a full blown MMA card. Haha.
