I bought one of NYE card as we were at a party, but other than that never. It gives me a good excuse to go out to a bar a drink to it
nope I have no idea what I reading it’s still on, just browsed all these posts applauding his career and I went off too early IGNORE PRVIOUS POST haha that’s a great free card btw
Silver lining for the PPV numbers, Colby's gimmick isn't selling. I saw some of you say that we need people like him in the sport, that's only half true. We need personality, we don't need borderline racist weirdos lying about banging porn stars. If Stipe was just a LITTLE more public, he'd be the biggest babyface fighter of all time. I thought with the Modelo sponsorship, he'd be booked on more shows, but, no dice.
I never thought his gimmick was a draw, honestly. Like I said earlier, he’s not a charismatic guy at all and everything “edgy” he says sounds like he’s reading it off of a piece of paper right in front of him. At least guys like Chael would play the heel but still had enough charm to keep their cool and say some interesting things off the cuff. The most entertaining thing Colby ever did was get hit by a boomerang.
Everyone tried to do the Floyd gimmick, but that heel heat hasn't generated PPV's for anyone but Floyd and Chael, and Colby is no Chael. Though Chael was basically a babyface for that second fight with Anderson. You're right about the reading, he had to run through that promo at the weigh ins twice. He has maybe 5 things memorized that are halfway clever, and continues to use them over and over.
Most people can read through the bullshit with their BS radar and know Colby is a bad act At least Chael and Conor seem less rehearsed and closer to who they are
I am not a huge Chael fan fighting-wise, but he was the original McGregor of MMA. His persona worked because it was natural and his charisma was top notch. He does have some amazing fights under his belt. Colby beat one big name and then immediately called an entire country filth. I think that was his sincere personality shining through, and then because of the backlash he tried to turn it into "I'm the bad boy this sport needs." Except we don't, and his comments aren't entertaining they're just shitty. While he's got great endurance and stamina, the dude ran straight into a flush punch from Anjos at the very beginning of a round. Most of his solid strikes were in the midst of trying to just brawl. I remain not impressed and don't believe he'll beat Woodley when the time comes.
Oooooof does anybody remember that knee Rampage took from Silva back in their 2nd fight at Pride? Probably one of the hardest and most damaging knees I can recall.
One of the few MMA moments that actually makes me cringe. Rampage got him back pretty damn well though with that left hook in their UFC fight.
This is true. Pride rules were very different and I think Silva had more trouble in a cage than a ring. Both phenomenal fighters I would like to see retired lol.
Haha I agree. Although Rampage is a weird one because he just started looking like he didn't care... He started losing fights that he would have won in his prime because he looked unmotivated whereas some of the other guys from his era end up getting KO'ed left and right. For the most part, his chin still looks as good as it ever did.
He can take some hard hits, but his power and speed has gone down. The last time I watched him weigh in at Bellator he looked gaunt. Almost unrecognizable. Probably not just from weight cutting, just a lack of muscle retaining.
Rampage was my first big myth fighter. When he came over, I only knew him as the legend in Japan slamming dudes. He did well for awhile, but I think he’s taken too many shots now. To see him go out like this, hurts my heart.
While I do love Rampage and he's been a hugely entertaining fighter, his lost to Jon Jones was what put me onto Jones and had me recognize him as one of the best. I hope Rampage beats Silva and then retires.
Yeah I think that's probably what I'm seeing. He never was one to be in amazing shape for as good as he was, so the older he got, the less he could coast off of his skill and talent. You can tell he's just not all the way there physically anymore even when he didn't have to cut weight for the HW tourney.
