You know what, I'm not even mad about the fight being scrapped (I do feel sorry for those of you who are going, though). At least in this particular instance, Yoel was lucky he even got the shot after missing weight against Rockhold. The fact that Whittaker has already beaten him recently leaves this at a good place. Romero had everything to gain and couldn't give himself the chance.
Good. If you have to be held up, you shouldn't be fighting. It's still one of the most baffling parts of the sport. I want to see guys fight, not compete with each other over who can cheat the scale the most without dying.
Ultimately it would have to be the weight monitoring system, just like USADA. You can only fight at the weight you average throughout the year. But I doubt they want to pay for that. Bumping people to the next weight class up after missing weight would be a good start too.
That might work. It might be inconvenient, but lot of people have suggested some kind of earlier weigh-in to start and then weighing them again on fight day, only allowing them to be within a certain percentage more of their original weight. That way they can't fluctuate quite so much. I'm sure they would have to work out a lot of kinks and figure out some kind of penalty system for that so that they didn't cancel a thousand fights on fight day, but they need something to keep these guys from abusing the system and, in turn, themselves.
Deducting points, plus the fine, is something I've really come around on. Miss by 1lb, take a point. 2-4, two points. Anything over four should just be cancelled.
The way this is all being handled is disgusting. It's going to take someone dying for them to change the rules.
Watching the weigh ins and it seems like the fight will happen. They announced it as non title but nothing about it being off
Welp. I hope Whitaker wins. In other news, Blaydes looks the best he ever has. It'd be a huge win for him.
Ordered the ppv. I haven't ordered one since ufc 205, which was a year and a half ago. Feels like it's been such a long time, but I could not pass up this card. Best card of the year easily and it's not even close. Wish the main event was for the title, but it should still be a crazy fight. Glad Whittaker still took the fight.
Covington annoys me, but not exactly because of what he says...it’s mostly because everything “controversial” he says is clearly scripted and makes me cringe. When he trips over his words, he’ll back up and repeat it verbatim like he’s reading off of a piece of paper.
Literally nothing left to prove. He’s battled injuries for sooo long that I know he feels like he needs some solid closure but man...
