The first hour or so of this was absolutely tedious, just so much recapping of the last movie, completely unnecessary tie ins to previous entries, and endless talk about how great Tom Crui… uh I mean Ethan Hunt is. I left to use the bathroom and refill my popcorn and had zero regrets or anxiety that I missed anything.

But the sub sequence brought it back and then that plane scene was just perfection. It was worth the ticket price just for that. When the parachute ignited I lost my mind.

Thinking about this again since it was bumped. It’s funny how the central theme of this movie is that we have to trust one another to survive and yet it demonstrates no trust in the audience to figure out what’s going on for the first 90 minutes. The sub and plane scenes still absolutely rule though.

Watched this on the plane back from Europe the other day. As other mentioned, it's kind of a mess but I loved it. Perfect blockbuster.

If the Fast and the Furious is the best version of the absurd version of this genre of film, I suppose this is the best version of a serious version. I have only seen a few of these films (I guess Renner's character died or turned bad?), but you just need to root for Cruise's character to outrun or outshoot or outfight and you get what you need. When characters are saying things like "we are living in the entity's reality!" you have to make a choice to engage with that wavelength.

It is really remarkable how Cruise was able to revive his career after the couch jumping and the anti-psychiatry rants. He never really rescinded those views or followed up with a nuanced answer, but instead just put his head down and did the work and became possibly the best action star ever. For all their muscles, the Schwarzenegger and Stallone types mostly stepped aside when the scenes got tough, even when it was plainly obvious like the motorcycle scenes in Terminator 2. In contrast, Cruise became the heir to Buster Keaton. If this is him ending this series and admitting his own mortality, he happens to be a deeply talented dramatic actor as well, as Magnolia showed us. Better that than any more time on the Scientology boat.

Renner neither went bad or died, he just never reappeared.

No explanation? Like how The Fast and the Furious wrote out The Rock?

He was supposed to come back for Fallout but had to drop out to film some Marvel shit (also rumored he was supposed to die in the opening scene and he didn't want to do that so he bailed)

It wasn't because of Marvel, it was because he wanted to be with his family.

Edit: Oh wait, you said Fallout. Never mind.

Edit edit: No wait, this article is about Fallout after all. We're still good.
