This happened to me so much when I worked at a summer camp and would watch like art house movies by myself in the staff lounge and it was always mortifying.
I was watching Blue Velvet with my brother a while ago. My mom’s boyfriend was in the room and asked if we were watching vintage porn.
Renting Elm Street 3 as a kid and my parents had no objection for me watching violent movies but my mom was pretty puritanical with sex scenes. My dad walks in during the topless scene between Joey and the nurse and certainly had no problem with it, sarcastically saying “ooh, you shouldn’t be watching this”
My dad is STILL like that and it’s incredibly frustrating. Like I’ll recommend some really beautiful movie to watch together and he’ll ask if it has any “sexual content”. He will definitely not be coming to any future Ari marathons at my house.
Oh yeah but there’s a line between thinking it’s awkward and making a huge deal out of it. Like he didn’t even feel comfortable watching Little Miss Sunshine with me because Alan Arkin kept swearing.
I watched this as a date movie with a girl I just started seeing which is fucking hilarious. It's probably the worst date movie since Blue Valentine. We both loved it though.
Also one of my shithead teenage coworkers loved this movie and kept asking me if I'd seen it and now that I've seen the movie, I'm so thrilled and puzzled by his enthusiasm towards it.
This didn't do a lot for me. I thought it was visually stunning but it felt like something was missing and I can't place what it was. That being said, if I were teaching anthropology, I would show this movie to my students. So many great example of how to do research and what not to do.
I hope she randomly broke into a debilitating wheeze sob every once in a while, just to really sell it.
Just thinking about how many gorgeously shot scenes there are in both of Ari Aster’s films. Between Hereditary and Midsommar, which scene or shot do you guys think will be the most iconic years from now?
Ooooo good question! I go with floating body into the tree house, shadowed naked man smiling, flaming Gabriel Byrne, titular head shot, Dani crying in Christian’s lap with slow zoom out the window, ritual sex scene, Dani’s trip.
Loved the cut. Really fleshed out the thesis stories and how tuned in Dani was early on. I think my favorite added scene was the child sacrifice pantomime. That was the perfect mix of playful and funny and disturbing/frightening. I’m still hoping this gets a physical release over here at some point.
