Same here. Definitely rewatching this one, probably never watching hereditary again, it just wallows in misery.
I won't watch either again. Maybe if this was an hour shorter I would get high and just appreciate how good it looks
I think Ari is really close to crafting a masterpiece and if he continues on this path, he’ll get there eventually. This is close for me but there are a few things that keep it from being truly amazing. That doesn’t discount how much I enjoyed it though. I wouldn’t mind if he took a good chunk of time to fine tune his next project.
Really really enjoyed it, plus the dark comedic parts didn’t take me out of the film. Aster is 2 for 2 in my book. Afterwards I read he went through a bad break up and incorporated a broken relationship into the movie. Also loved the theme of loss, family, and acceptance. Florence Pugh’s emotional turmoil was so gut wrenching. Visuals, music, and gore also terrific. so who was that killed Chidi? Was it the inbred guy who wore Mark’s body as a suit? It looks like they chopped off his dick for pissing on the tree. Christian paralyzed was a little unnerving given my history of sleep paralysis, just added to the intensity of this nightmare. Kinda wish they explored the Swedish guy more. So was it his job to make friends and recruit outsiders for the purpose of sacrifice? Got a few laughs in the theater from all the women assisting in the breeding ritual.
that must be right about chidi’s killer. i didn’t really understand who it was and didn’t have time to process, i kinda thought it was just mark on a ton of drugs and possessed into killing him somehow which is definitely not right lol.
The cult is super confusing. They base their religious texts on a disabled child, but it's not like "the lord chose this one to bless with his words", because they knowingly create a child of incest who is disabled. For a bit I thought they weren't really buying into their own bullshit, but just wanted to be a weird cult...however, you don't kill yourself by jumping off a cliff if you aren't fully committed. I keep coming back to Aster wanting to film some weird shit without really thinking through the world he built.
They mention that they’d prefer not to live their remaining years in hospice care and in pain and that life is a cycle. Plus the adult members who sacrificed themselves I think they believe they’ll be either reincarnated or live another existence in the afterlife.
I took that as a pretty scathing commentary on the lies cults build themselves on. They claim to have their own divine work that they “interpret” from a blessed voice, but it’s really just their own awful views continuing at the expense of an innocent person bred to have a painful existence.
They at least keep their weirdness more to themselves I would assume. They still have the breeding rules/rituals that probably have some casualties, plus the way they handle aging out, but other than that the day to day is probably pretty calm.
I mean @EASheartsVinyl has a good point that cults are going to believe some absurd shit, I'm just saying the actual basis of the cult is so dumb. I have a lot of family over 72, if I told them they should kill themselves I would get beat up. They would fight me and I would lose. Because 72 aint shit
Lots of real cults believe and do way crazier stuff than that though, which is why it seems weird to get hung up on. It also just seemed to be one of many many specific things they believe, not that it’s the ultimate bedrock of the whole system.
I have decided that I did, in fact, enjoy this movie. I would make a longer post about my thoughts but you all covered most of my thoughts I.e. cinematography, beautiful start to the film, great performances, a little long but still paced well/appropriately Only thing I haven’t seen mentioned is that there’s ideas floating around that the guy Pelle? Killed her parents and sister. Anyone see or recall anything that would give credence to this theory?
Haven’t heard that until your post, but I don’t know if I can’t think of a fan theory I’ve hated more in recent memory.
I’ll have to dig and see if I can find something spelling that out more. TV Tropes seems to have latched onto the fact that there’s a flower crown in her parents’ room for a bunch of their theories, but even in the most generous view I would say that only lends some evidence to the idea that the cult was influencing their lives more specifically, not that he literally murdered them. This movie blurs the line between destiny, coincidence, and controlled actions much more than Hereditary did, so I don’t think it has any simple answers.
Few days late and just catching up on this thread but when people wish there were intermissions I lose my absolute mind lol it would be so much worse than just missing two minutes of a movie to pee
I couldn’t find anything after a quick search, but I did find one that manages to be even worse, and that’s saying something. It was someone speculating that DANI AND PELLE TOGETHER planned the entire thing. I need to get out of bed and go for a walk.
