The disorienting upside down shot as they drive in was so, so good. A lot of awesome use of focus too.
A lot to unpack and really well made. Thought the first half was a lot stronger and definitely agree with all of the comments about the bloated length. At times I think the slow pace really worked to build tension or to show how truly overcome by grief Dani was, but for the most part I think this could have benefited from another cut.
This was fucking amazing, and I read an interview today where Ari said if he had his way, it was actually going to be longer lol
Thank god it wasn't longer. I would have been bored out of my mind. I was unnerved the entire movie mostly due expecting something more to happen and if any more time was added it would have killed that feeling.
I desperately want a behind the scenes doc or at least a very thorough interview about the lighting in this movie. How they achieved the colors/shadows/brightness they wanted. Everything was so vivid. I want to see the setups.
My favorite shot in any film this year This was an event for me. I cannot wait for viewing number two on Friday morning
I’m so bummed because I was so excited for this and I think I kind of hated this movie. I’ll expound later but man, very disappointed in this.
There’s one scene that I thought of @EASheartsVinyl while watching that I’m curious to see if she mentions it.
I don’t understand how this Midsommar ceremony takes places every 90 years they have photos of A TON of May Queens. At best, they should only be able to have photos of 2 or 3? There weren’t cameras 300 years ago. The Swedish guy says his parents died in a fire, hinting they they died in the ceremony that happens at the end of the movie...90 years ago?
There’s a Midsommar every year, but this particular event and set of festivities only happens every 90. (Aka the human sacrifice)
I’m reading reactions online and this comment is nearly word-for-word what I thought about it, although I’d be a more scathing towards the length and about how nearly every scene felt 2-3 minutes too long.
Wow. I actually read it. “Wouldn’t the ending be more impactful if they weren’t on the rocks? Or maybe Ari should have dropped the dead family story” That’s such a dense misunderstanding of what’s presented onscreen. I do think a lot of the people who aren’t as into this really are unfamiliar with more abstract, less narrative-driven film.
Could say the same thing about this site, Twitter, Facebook, etc... Doesn’t matter where the opinion is, cmon
I don’t know how to read the still doesn’t really understand why Aster felt the need to specify Swedish dudes parents died in a fire. That seems to be specific foreshadowing to the fire at the end that happens every 90 years.
