thought it was weird he didn’t tweet kate, glad she’s back too. would feel weird to have a mike project without her
Finished this yesterday, still thinking about it, absolutely incredible series. I need to see Hamish, Rahul and Samantha cast in everything — I enjoyed the performances across the board but those three, holy shit. this show really resonated with me. As a fan of vampire lore, I have never seen it interpreted through the lens of Catholicism and Mike Flanagan pulled it off marvellously. As an atheist who grew up in the Greek Orthodox Church, some of the arrogance & judgment on display took me back there while the monologues between Riley and Erin echoed my thoughts towards religion and my beliefs about death. As someone with addicts in the family and my own experiences with alcohol, Joe Colley (that scene with Leeza fucked me up) and Riley broke my heart. They found forgiveness from the ones they hurt and within themselves and that profoundly affected me. A conversation with my parents that I come back to a lot circles around heaven and hell. Of course, I don’t believe in heaven and hell. But the way my dad describes his belief? It makes sense, it’s totally human and completely secular: if, when my dad dies, my sister and I look back on him with joy, laughter, comfort, think of him when we hear his favourite Metallica song (Fade to Black) and miss him, he’s in heaven. If, when he dies, my sister and I look back on him with disgust, resentment or feel relieved that he’s dead, he’s in hell. At the end of the day, our words and actions are the only things we can control. We can’t control time, we can’t stop death, and we certainly can’t dictate how others should see us. So, yeah, this show really took me by surprise with the vampirism and then the emotional connection. Outstanding.
It took my about a year to finish Hill House since I stopped midway through, but it resonated with me. I was captivated by Midnight Mass and love it. Will rewatch it soon. I started watching Sandman. Got through episode 1 and just want feeling it for now. So, started Bly Manor since I skipped that one and it's hitting the spot! Excited to see how this plays out. I know The Midnight Club is the series this year. Going to have a Mike Flannagan filled few months here.
Bly is so good. Much more understated and character driven but I prefer it to Hill House. Midnight Mass might be by favorite overall though. Want to do a rewatch soon.
