some good laughs from my crowd here mostly in the first half. i liked the satirical parts there but it seems like they got completely forgotten in the second half.
A guy in the bathroom after it here said “I think I’m too dumb to understand that movie” which says a lot about the state of the nation.
Hm. The “creepers” were adorable, and the messy bisexual bitch was almost a fun character, and the scientist girlie was charming, but… I don’t think I liked this as a whole very much? Which really surprises me.
There’s a movie here about a guy constantly dying and being re-cloned and everything, and then there’s a movie about a bizarre religious political space colonizer cult, and I’m not seeing why these two concepts were brought together because neither one seems to say all that much about the other, so as a result they both feel half-fleshed out
Funny that a movie with Steven Yuen which is about multiple versions of the same guy was released in the same week as the Invincible War episode of Invincible where Steven Yuen played multiple versions of the same guy
The more I think about it, the more I like it, and it's something I'd throw on again in the future and probably thoroughly enjoy a second time as well. I do appreciate this place a lot though for the discussion, as I just ventured out into the wild to see the discourse elsewhere, and no thank you. Won't be doing that again. I can see a lot of the complaints about tone, and a mish mash of ideas, but I think for the most part, it was a pretty compelling whole.
I'll preface this by saying that I liked it overall, but the thought I had shortly after it ended was "does Bong Joon-ho think Americans can't handle subtlety?" followed immediately by "uh... well, okay, yeah, fair."
Related, I was scrolling through Netflix the other day and saw “Don’t Look Up” and thought “remember when people said this was too on the nose?” and turns out it still wasn’t clear enough.
A vast swath of the nation watches Yellowstone and The Chosen, no shit they wouldn’t understand basic subtlety. When was the last time these people actually read a book? There you go.
I wanted to like this a lot more than I actually did unfortunately. I definitely agree with the general consensus that there's too much in the movie that didn't really need to be there Pattinson is amazing in the role though and there's still a lot I liked. Solid B- for me probably
I liked this but felt like the final act was kind of a dud of an action set piece. Love the ménage a trois, the private dinner, the incinerator fight, the first 30 minutes. a perfectly placed “Twilight” (!!!) needle drop though with Pattinson in the scene is basically unmatched. Incredible placement and joke. So perfectly harmonious.
Normally you'd worry about a directors' career after a loss like that but in three years he will have another great Korean film coming out.
