My initial reaction upon seeing the trailer for the first time was "Ehhhh", but now seeing all these positive reviews has me more siked to see the film.
i really enjoyed this, even if that's apparently not everyone's experience. for better and to a lesser degree worse, it has more in common with bong's other english language films than anything else of his. pattinson rules, he's basically both pinky and the brain in this. i didn't like that they kinda dropped a subplot involving steven yuen's character, and i also feel like there might've been a little meddling from zaslav too (hence all the delays) but i'm struggling to think of anything from the year so far i liked more, even if it's not parasite/memories of murder level
this is fun, feels kind of forgettable though. wouldn't put it on par with his previous English language films (which are good). just kind of an odd one-off good performances from everyone but poor Steven Yeun gets forgotten in this script for several half-hour stretches, honestly might have been kinder to just junk his character entirely
Hard to not to be entertained with all of the humor going on here, some really fun scenes. Definitely thought this would be sort of Edge Of Tomorrow core with a thoughtful twist, maybe the multiples getting out of hand and really grappling with the concept of death, and was not so much expecting it to go more traditional Bong Joon Ho Okja/Snowpiercer direction instead. Suppose I blame the very misleading trailer. I enjoyed it enough, laughed a ton, but yeah it felt a little like there were two movies here that were mashed into one. “Sauces are the true litmus test of a civilization” was a banger quote until it goes there with it lol. Really didn’t love Ruffalo’s Trump thing even if he had some great moments as well. He and Collette played off of each other super well. Pattinson just putting on a fucking clinic here. Put Naomi Ackie in everything
yeah Ruffalo was genuinely rough to watch at times. everyone else was great, if not always well served by the script a lot of lines got laughs out of my crowd (and me) but thinking about it today, the only one I can actively recall is "looks like he boofed an electric eel" lmao. in other words a lot of easy laughs but not many that really stick with you, at least imo
Yeah I don't want to sour anyone on this as I did like it, but I think all of his English films are a pretty big step below his non English ones. Pattinson was great but Ruffalo and Collette annoyed me. I just kind of lost steam with it during the third act and wasn't super invested in the end. Didn't hate it by any means but it definitely has more in common with something like Snowpiercer (with nods to The Host) than it does Parasite.
Saying people would voluntarily eat gruel and not fuck for 4 years if Elon/trump told them too was so funny
I enjoyed this a good bit. Loved Pattison a lot here. Yeun was definitely underutilized. I don’t think his subplot was dropped necessarily, as I think his punishment for that was in his time served when everyone else was also in the prison. I’ll admit that is not stated explicitly, but since I saw the post referencing it, I paid extra attention to what he had going on and I think that technically covers it.
