I haven't watched this in years so this could be embarrassing, but when I was in 11th grade I think(???) my buddies and I covered mwY for a school talent show. Keep in mind, I went to a small, private, Christian school. Directly before us there was a mime act and before that some people singing hymns and stuff. I'm on vox.
This is actually pretty solid! Y'all have the dynamics pretty much down and you did a good job with Aaron's part (he is hard as shit to imitate without possibly sounding really, really dumb). I'm also quite jealous that you went to a school where more than two people knew who mwY even is lol
thanks dude. I had to commission people from outside my school haha. But the drummer and the guitarist on the right knew who they were. Just wish I could do it again cause my vocals are so much better now but it was so much fun.
So a bunch of my post-hardcore listening friends make fun of me for my "soft" music taste (including my girlfriend who listens to much heavier stuff haha)... I usually had a hard time in the past getting into any heavy music that didn't have at least some prominent clean vocals, or heavy melodic aspect to it. The whole "spoken-wordcore" thing with these guys and other bands just wasn't really my thing, as shallow as that sounds I think it was mostly an aesthetic preference. Lately though I've been getting into some stuff that's pushed my boundaries... I really like La Dispute's Rooms of the House after my girlfriend got me into it for example. I saw these guys open for Circa and really dug it even not knowing the material very well, so I figured it's finally time for another, more serious listen! Gonna start with Brother, Sister in a bit and report back my thoughts.
Gonna start the album right after I finish this listen of Hybrid Theory (I told you guys my music taste was bad haha)
I remember the first time I heard mwY I was like, "da fuq dis shit?" Then I saw them open for Thrice and Brand New and they blew my mind and now I've seen them more times live than any other band. But it took that first show to really get me into their recordings. Edit: also, I'm sure they're lowkey joking, but that's really dumb of people to hate on you for liking multiple styles of music lol
It's more of just a joking thing, because I love post-hardcore but not the more abrasive, less melodic stuff as often... combined with me liking a lot of mainstream pop, hip-hop, R&B, etc. my friends joke that I'm just a pop fan who likes some guitars once in a while lol. It's all in good fun though, we all like a lot of the same types of music.
On my first serious listen, Brother, Sister is a really musically beautiful album. Lyrically/vocally however, I'm not quite as sold on first listen at least. The amount of religious allusions and natural/animal imagery definitely threw me off a bit, and in that way these lyrics almost remind me of religious hymns... not really sure if that's a good or bad thing yet. What I will say though is that I generally enjoy abstract lyrics that have to be analyzed for meaning, but these almost seem too abstract for me initially, I'm not really feeling a strong connection to much of them.
As much as I love Brother/Sister, and it was the first album by them I got into, I suggest digesting Catch For Us the Foxes first and working your way through their discography from there
I slept on mwy for so long. I knew so many people in high school who were into them, but I only liked the song Messes Of Men. When I got to college I finally fell in love with them, but now I have nobody to share it with. Other friends here who I got into a lot of bands (Brand New, Foxing, FIL, etc.) for some reason won't really even try mwy. It's heartbreaking. I guess people get so turned off by Aaron's vocal style. Which I get, but man, these guys might be the most talented band across the board. From the rhythm section, to guitars, to vocals they all are so good at what they do.
There's a lot of personal stuff you can get from them. There's definitely a lot of substance and meaning there and they're not as abstract as they may initially seem.
Just realised I've been listening to mewithoutYou for well over half of my life. There's not many active bands I still listen to that I can say that for.
I'm a bit over 30 now and have been listening since I was 15... Damn. Never thought of it that way. Definitely the only band I've listened to for that long without taking a break that are still together. Every Time I Die is close though.
