This upcoming week I'm trying to listen to a lot of bands from "post-hardcore" and related genres that I've never really listened to or clicked with before... these guys are pretty high up on the list. So many people I know rave about them, but they've just never been the type of post-hardcore that I've been into before (I know they're not really strictly post-hardcore but who cares about genre labels lol). I'm usually into the more catchy melodic or aggressive sides of the post-hardcore genre, and for whatever reason bands that play this type of music with largely spoken-word vocals have never clicked with me. Same reason I haven't liked any La Dispute I've heard before. I'm realizing now that this is a pretty shallow aesthetic mindset to have and is limiting me from getting into some of the most acclaimed bands in this scene, so I'm gonna try mewithoutYou and some similar bands again with a more open mind. Any consensus on a best album to start with?
Will start with Brother, Sister I guess since I've heard so much about it from friends... well I've heard a lot about both but especially that one! I've been saying I would give this band another real shot for a while but I'm finally gonna do it this time lol. I have a hunch they would appeal to me more than La Dispute, at least initially, but that's another band I'll give a shot later in the week.
A lot of the other bands I'm gonna try to get into are stuff like The Sound of Animals Fighting, HRVRD, Consider the Thief... more melodic/accessible stuff, so this will be a nice change of pace probably.
If you like the more aggressive stuff, Pale Horses wouldn't be a bad starting point either, since it's pretty close sonically to B, S and Catch For Us The Foxes Brother, Sister is the best though so I hope you enjoy
Was hoping some people in this thread could help me out with something. I swear that I remember reading somewhere that the song Fox's Dream of the Log Flume is at least partially inspired by a failed marriage proposal Aaron made. Looking back, however, I can't find anything about it and I'm beginning to doubt my memory. Does anyone know if this is in fact true?
i don't know about that song in particular, but that's what some of Catch for us the foxes was about.
Maybe that's what I'm remembering. I think that would apply to Fox's Dream as well, however, particularly in the "I went down on one knee..." section of the song.
A-b life is all about that marriage proposal and the same girl Also catch for us the foxes has songs about it but is a more broader look on sinful youth foxes = sins Yes foxs dream is about the same failed proposal but more of a look back at it many years later
was gonna try to answer this for him, myself. but you did a way better job of explaining it than I would have haha
Seeing them tonight, I am so excited. I'm going to the show alone, which I've never done before, so I do feel a little weird about it. But, I've missed them the past 5 times they've come to Michigan and there is no way I'm going to miss them again. According to Setlist.fm they played A Glass... last night. I know it's unlikely, but I'd adore if it stayed in the set for tonight
I wish I could make it tonight. It's three hours from where I live though, and I have to work early in the morning.
I've had this same problem (although typically with school instead of work) with them for years, haha. A lot of it was also just inconvenient circumstances that prevented me from making it to shows, but when I saw that they were going to be in Grand Rapids (which is only 45 or so minutes from me) I was ecstatic.
just drink a bit (or a lot) and you'll do fine - that's what I did and even made some cool mwY fan friends and got to say hi to Aaron
going to shows doesn't have to be scary or weird, there are about as many pros and cons to it as there are with going with other people. Hope you have fun, they're great live!
Thanks guys. I'm at the show right now waiting for the opener to go on and I'm very happy I decided to come. I'm hoping my Hotelier shirt might strike up some conversation haha
Into It. Over It. just finished up and they were great. I'll have to revisit Standards soon since they played a lot off of it and the songs translated very well live. Currently waiting for MWY to go on
They really were fantastic last night. They bring such an energy to the stage, and Aaron in particular has a fascinating stage presence. They played a few too many tracks off A->B Life for my tastes (5) but hearing them open with Bullet To Binary was a lot of fun, and Silencer was a treat. They also played the three songs that made me a fan of them in the first place: In A Sweater..., Fox's Dream, and The Fox, The Crow... (this one was just Aaron playing acoustically, which was a lot of fun, but I definitely would've enjoyed hearing the full band version). The crowd was VERY into the performance, and got pretty rowdy a few times. The look on Aaron's face when a kid got up to stage dive was priceless, haha. Overall, I'm very glad I ended up going, as I certainly vacillated between staying home and going quite a few times. I'm so happy to have properly seen them as one of my favorite bands, and I can't wait to see them again in February with Circa Survive.
i re-listened to Ten Stories today and it was wonderful. the various Smiths references always make me grin. Such a fantastically cohesive record.
