Our house wrapped in disrepair, A small mouse peeked out from a hole beneath the stairs Nearby to where my dad sat in his favorite chair, Thinking about the gov't and muttering a prayer So I scattered some oats in hopes she'd stay And sat still to stop from scaring her away- But she hurried on her little way And scurried around my mind Ever since, Every day
I listened to AB Life for the first time in maybe a year and idk my feelings haven't changed -- still not their finest hour -- but it's crazy that was their first album cause it's still really good
Had my entire iPod library on shuffle this evening and "Cattail Down" popped up. I've always considered this song to be one of the weakest in their catalog but MAN it just blew me away tonight. And now I'm starting to reanalyze my lukewarm feelings toward It's All Crazy! in relation to the rest of their discography. I'm starting to think my fear of mewithoutYou continuing in the campfire folk direction fueled my negative thoughts about it when it came out. But now that they've safely returned to their roots I think my perspective on the album has just entirely changed and I can really enjoy the genius of it for what it is.
"Cattail Down" is one of my favourites on It's All Crazy, possibly one of my top 10 mwY songs. I love the outro, everything from the build starting with "Headed east out of St. Paul..." to the repeated refrain at the end with the horns and the background vocals switching out and blending together. So good.
Liking this in part because I completely agree and both of those songs are incredible, and also for your CRJ avatar.
1) Brother, Sister 2) Catch For Us The Foxes 3) Ten Stories 4) A-->B life 5) Pale Horses 6) It's All Crazy! It's All A Dream! It's All False! it's alright Pale Horses could rise on the list with more listens but so far it's there because while it's a very pretty album, i haven't quite caught on to any particular things that jump out at me. haven't heard anything else. Would still rather listen to that bottom album than most music and that's why this band is great.
im just weird guys. Earth was actually my least favorite Alchemy Index EP by Thrice. To me it's just too easy to get corny and make up a bunch of silly melodies when a good modernized band tries to "go traditional", like "The Lion And The Wolf" sounds like a song in a G-rated children's songbook I practiced my first month of learning piano. It's All Crazy isn't all like that but some of that just tends to be a turn off for me idk. I'd rather put on Arcade Fire if I want to hear that kind of sound and then stick to MeWithoutYou when i can FEEL THE BASS AND ALL OF THE INSECURITIES IN THE LYRICS
it's all crazy ... is one of my favorite albums ever. especially in the late fall / early winter, it's perfect to me.
haha, I remember when I used to think Brother, Sister wasn't the best mwY album. What a crazy time. wild, right? wild. I recall saying I am not too crazy about Sun and Moon a few pages back and I'm back to report I was wrong as hell edit: for the record I thought this when I hadn't listened to it yet and so I thought nothing could pooossibly top Foxes lmao
Brother, Sister has been my favorite of all their albums since Messes of Men first started playing on my earbuds, and then reaffirmed during Wolf Am I! but there are some albums, especially by this crop of bands that hit me fresh pretty often. Been on a Thursday kick today for example, and Brand New's Daisy and Devil and God hit me like that literally every time as well. I just happened to be thinking about B, S and put on Sun and Moon in isolation
I think mewithoutYou has one of the best discographies of any band. Not one of their albums fails to live up to being at least great in my eyes and I think three of them are incredible. That said, while trying hard to keep in mind that music is subjective, I still can't see Brother, Sister as anything less than their best album. I don't think it's demeaning to the rest of their work to say it's an almost impossible feat to match. I think it just speaks of how incredible the band is that they could craft such an incredible record. It's just that perfect of an album in it's flow, musicianship, lyrical quality, etc. Lyrically and musically, Catch For Us the Foxes hits me on a deeper level than B, S in some ways, and Pale Horses almost matches B, S in terms of flow and cohesiveness, but Brother, Sister is like a greatest hits album of a band whose entire library is already great. It single-handedly took my limited view of what music should look like and flipped it over on its head forever. No music could be too weird or ambitious after I heard Brother, Sister because the weirdest and most ambitious album I'd ever heard (at the time) was also the most brilliant and cohesive. I know I've probably ranted about Brother, Sister in this thread before, but I could do this all day.
And it's only their third album. You would think that releasing something as perfect as Brother, Sister would come after years and years and YEARS of touring, recording, practicing, writing, etc... Not "just" after 6 or so years together.
to be fair, though, they toured pretty hard those first six years. B,S was also their first album with Greg, who everyone but Ricky had been in a band with before, so they had a good deal of experience playing and writing together.
Last night I was at a Julien Baker show, and she did a Q&A after her performance during which she mentioned that MWY is her favorite band. Even better, I wore my MWY shirt to the show, and I stood up to ask a question and she got excited and said "You have a MWY shirt on!" which was really sweet
She's so great. When I saw her I was a little unsure of how those songs would translate live but she just captivated the room.
