Travis Morrison, Tim Kasher, and John K Sampson are some of my other favorites. good names being dropped in here
I'll always love MF Doom and Andre 3K. Obviously, Kendrick has probably been the most powerful writer over the past few years as well.
yeah Kendrick would be my number 2. Idk I love everything MC Ride has done with Death Grips, even if sometimes hes nonsensical
I think I'm thankful for giving you three "ha's" worth of laughter but maybe not. I'll sleep on it. Or maybe I won't. Eh... edit: when andy hull said mana was a hell of a drug i think he might have meant nyquil because this shit has had me fucked up for dayzzzz edit 2: also to add the the lyricist talk, andy hull is a fantastic writer too.
I never learned to love Death Grips. I'm embarrassed by it. Killer Mike has to be mentioned too, obviously.
DG arent for most people and I wish they were. But the aggressive, loud, morbid form of hip hop isnt too popular, or at least the way they do it isnt. But I love everything that band has done.
Haha, yes, love it! It's a great song to play - I hadn't played the guitar for months but could play the basic chords straight away.
Aaron's definitely up there for me. He's not my personal favourite but he's probably the one that impresses me the most.
I had no interest in mewithoutYou's music until I read Aaron's lyrics while listening to "Messes of Men" and all I could think was, "These might be the most clever lyrics I've ever read." Then I went through Brother, Sister and had the same thought with every single song. What gets me about Aaron Weiss is that if there are better lyricists than him--and there aren't many--he's still so brilliantly unique and unlike anyone I've heard. "Still there's a whisper in my ear The voice of loneliness and fear So I say, "Devil, disappear! I'm still (ehh… technically…) a virgin after 27 years Which never bothered me before What's maybe 50 more?"" Who else would come up with that?
Aaron is my favorite by far, but Yoni Wolf is very, VERY good. "Out of every woman on earth, who will I mate with? Or will I spit empty threats until all that's left Is a million zeros printed on a roll of ticker-tape? And one last echo of the final tiny wave in my wake? Will all my unused seed collect like mercury In some kind of afterlife for halves?"
Yeah I think Yoni's my favourite lyricist in the world ever but Aaron is close behind and gets credit for getting me, as an atheist, to always admire the beautiful and compelling ways he conceptualises his spirituality/religion.
I see those lyrics and raise you these...which are some of my favorite from "In a Sweater Poorly Knit." As you plow some other field try and forget my name See what harvest yields, and, supposing I'd do the same I planted rows of peas but by the first week of July They should have come up to my knees But they were maybe ankle high
Same here. While he's not my absolutely favorite, he's the one whose lyrics I can read over and over again and still be completed amazed by
"Caught me making eyes at the other boatman's wives, and heard me laughing louder at the jokes told by their daughters I'd set my course for land, but you well understand it takes a steady hand to navigate adulterous waters" The metaphors that he uses are easy enough to decipher yet difficult enough to not be able to come up with on your own even if you're trying really, really hard.
If ever You come near I'll hold up high a mirror, Lord, I could never show You anything as beautiful as You
