their best opener imo. Absolutely blew me away the first time i heard it. Foxes is my favorite on TS and TS might actually be my second favorite mwY record. But honestly Foxes, PH, and TS all have a stake at being my second favorite mwY record.
AB Life is also really underrated, very aggressive and raw but its still got that mwY sense of melody with great lyrics.
Revisiting their discography made me remember why they were my favorite band for so long. This bands music feels like it was just made for me. Being a queer southerner surrounded by religion and redneck masculinity, I totally relate to Aaron's deeply honest, sometimes even ridiculous, thoughts and beliefs and experiences. His struggle with God and gender roles and depression are so eerily relatable, right down to the fact that my abusive ex and his troubling ex are both named Amanda. His constant struggle between physical and mental health, in addition to spiritual understand, is fascinatingly similar to my struggles in an almost twisted Bhuddist sense. So yeah I like this band a bit I guess
man, ive fallen back in love with this band. Its almost nostalgic in a way. They mean a lot to me, and have a very good shot at being my all time favorite band but then again i have a lot of those.
She put on happiness like a loose dress over pain I'll never know "So the peace you had," she said, "I must confess, I'm glad to see it go" We're two white roses lying frozen just outside his door I've made you so happy and so sad, but which should I be more sorry for? like, fuck. Aaron is the best lyricist in rock music i stand by that like i stood by it in 2011
Not in any genre. I prefer Sam Beam and John K. Samson. Kevin Devine is another that's gotten more and more consistent over his career with lyrics. But as far as punk and post-hardcore related music yeah I can't think of anyone I like as much as Aaron Weiss.
Aaron is definitely in my top 3 of lyricists, not sure who else is up there with him though. Perhaps Kevin Devine as well.
My favorite lyricists are Aaron Weiss and The National's Matt Berninger, but there also aren't really any bands I listen to specifically for the lyricism, so yeah, lol.
She's as green and delicate as a stem And I walk heavy on this delicate ground Oh... there i go... showing off again Self-impressed with how well I can put myself down AND THERE I GO AGAIN, TO THE NEXT STEP A NEW LEVEL OF THAT SAME EXACT FEIGNED HUMILITY And this, for me, goes on and on to the point of nausea Shadow am I Like a suspicion that's never confirmed But it's never denied Wolf am I Eh, shadow I think is better Cause I'm not something More like the absence of something so SHADOW AM I! The whole material world seems to me like a newspaper headline It explicitly demands your attention, and may even contain some truth But what's really going on here? ^^ that section KILLS it
He walks that perfect line of being an extremely clear and eloquent communicator, but not spoon feeding you a meaning -- it's still wide open to interpret and relate to in different ways. Hyper specific and universal at the same time, really really great lyricist
Berninger, John Darnielle, Weiss, Craig Finn, Joanna Newsom. These are my favorites ( in rock / indie music ). Also hard for me not to throw Leonard Cohen in there, and Mark Kozelek's 'Benji' album although I don't like the rest of his music really. Hip-hop lyrics are a different ballpark entirely, though.
Triple Post: Travis Morrison on 'Change' But doing this inventory, I still think Weiss or Newsom are probably the two with the most "oh fuck" moments lyrically for me.
