Im a little worried this is going to take cues from genres that arent really my cup of tea

 

Loving that I can stick this EP on in the car with my wife and (just about) get away with it. No chance with the full length (although she didn't mind Julia so one can hope).

 

Which genres aren't your cup of tea?

sludge, alternative

 

All their albums have been influenced by alternative lol but I don’t see this being a sludge album

 

I don't even know what sludge is, haha. Does Julia sound sludgy?

I don't really know what alternative is either! I think I thought that was a broad category that many things can sit in.

 

welp julia prompted me to finally read 1984 and i am not disappointed at all. very interesting to read it trying to think through aaron's processing when he wrote the song

Well there's your problem hahaha. Reddit is a funny place. But yeah I was reading some of the stuff over there too.

 

I think they meant sludge as a descriptor for the guitar tone at times, which is 1) probably hyperbole and 2) different from the sub genre

anyways I dont really like sludgey guitar tones most of the time

whos to say out of those who havent listened if it isnt hyperbole. guess Ill see how it goes over for me

Can someone define sludge for me? The only band I've listened to that I've heard described as sludge is O'Brother - is that an accurate depiction of the sludge sound?

 

The ambiguity of genres and subgenres really gets on my nerves.

 

mastodon was at one point described as sludge. prob their connection to neurosis, the sludgiest band

there’s a little sludge (read: mostly just using this word as a signifier of heaviness and groove both of which this band has always had plenty of) in the guitar tones i guess but it is not the dominant mood of the album at all

 

there are some bands that no matter what they do, you always connect with their music. mwY is one of those bands for me. i'm going to love this album.

Yeah, heaviness and groove sounds like vintage mewithoutYou.

 

I'm really into post-grindcore curbside shoebox kind of bands these days.

 

I do remember describing Blindside to my friends at school as "post-hardcore Swedish rock" and feeling pretty proud of myself. I miss 2004.

 

i had another mewithoutYou dream last night... i really need this album to come out, thats 2 nights in a row.
