I used to put 'hands on deck' on sooooo many mixes for crushes. Then listen to it on repeat when they'd break up with me.
I've suddenly listened to Pale Horses five times today. Brother, Sister is still tops for me, but boy does this album come closer than I ever believed.
I’ve long given up trying to compare CFUTF and Brother, Sister with Pale Horses because the earlier records meant so much to me it’s hard to separate the emotion and nostalgia for those teenage years. It just skews any kind of objectivity for me! Pale Horses is phenomenal though. Man I can’t wait for [Untitled].
Brother, Sister is one of five albums that go back and forth as my favorite of all-time. And it flows the best of any I’ve heard. I don’t think it’s possible for it to be beaten in my book solely cause of that, plus the nostalgia and the legacy it’s built with me. But listening to Pale Horses today it really struck me that it might be the band’s second masterpiece, which I wouldn’t have said before. Everything they do is masterful to varying degrees, but the album is pretty much perfect. It took me a while to come around to Blue Hen, Lilac Queen, and Magic Lantern Days but those have become some of my favorites now. There’s nothing I’d change about the album. Btw, CFUTF is a very close third and Ten Stories is a very close fourth. All four are pretty much five star albums in my book.
late to the ranking and lyrics discussion, but i’m just gonna jump in In a sweater poorly knit birnam wood rainbow signs carousels son of a widow red cow everything was beautiful and nothing hurt the soviet the dryness and the rain bethlehem, wv/julia (apologies to its all crazy & 10 stories)
Birnam Wood Are you a God? And shall your grace Grow weary of your saints? . . . Come untie your little son Before the angel comes
Just did a Ten Stories run for the first time in a while and it went over really well. I might enjoy it more than PH now. Its like I like PHs aesthetic more but I like TSs songs more and as an album more overall. Its got no song quite as great as Watermelon Ascot though.
It's just never clicked with me. I enjoy it but nothing about it lyrically or melodically does all that much for me.
