It’s definitely fantastic and whenever I see those songs live I’m like, “damn, that album is incredible.” But it’s still my 2nd to least favorite, with A->B Life holding that title
When I rank them in my head or whatever, it’s second or third to last, but I swear when I’m in my car or apartment, it’s the most fun to sing along to and has plenty of goosebumps moments.
I’d say that it’s permanently above [A->B] Life and Ten Stories for me, then it floats around with the others depending on the day.
Just finished their set in Phoenix, it was an awesome show. Was surprised how good the opener Davey and the Chains was, they killed it. Here's the setlist: My Exit, Unfair! 9:27am Dryness and Rain February 1878 Flee Thou Matadors The Angel of Death Came to David's Room Foxes Dream of a Log Flume Tortoises All the Way Down Julia Mexican War Streets Paper Hangar New Wine New Skins Red Cow Hydra Bears Vision of St. Agnes All Circles Encore: Four Word Letter Pt. 2 Bethlehem, WV In a Sweater Poorly Knit
Catching up with this thread, haha! I like your thinking. Brother, Sister is a top 5 album of all time for me too. I might actually include Catch For Us The Foxes there too. It's just so hard to re-capture that era of my life, but mewithoutYou are one of the few that somehow manage to do that for me. I love that [Untitled] has given you this feeling. I think, perhaps, Pale Horses did that for me. I'm not ready to rank these releases to be honest. Need more time to dwell on it. I like the phrase "hair lower" as it really emphasises how good these releases are. There's only a hair between them. I like that. It's 9/10 for me, but the majority of the songs are as good as any other song in the catalogue. I love the album and have since day 1. Timothy Hay is one of my favourite songs and I particularly love when everyone sings along at the end when they play it live. It's just their other albums are so good so this one gets pushed down the rankings. I prefer it to [A-->B] Life. I love that they don't have a set tour setlist and play different songs each night. Takes an incredible band to be able to pull that off so consistently.
I appreciate how they [usually] never throw Flee, Thou Matadors in a set if it has New Wine in it or vice versa. Playing both under the same roof in one night would likely lead to serious structural damage. EDITED
They didn't play New Wine, New Skins in Lawrence and I was a little bummed but then I remembered it was MWY and I would probably be happy with any setlist they played haha.
I think the only thing I'd be unhappy with is if they didn't play anything from the untitled era and/or primarily played [A->B] Life songs. Everything else would be gravy.
!!! Wow. I cannot believe I missed this. Holy cow. I cannot fathom what that set would feel like at the end.
Oh yeah, I did catch it. That's why it would disappoint me on this tour seeing as that's still fresh in my mind.
Boy. Errors in set list recall really get this crowd going. The real gem is when they play Flee, New Wine, & Tortoises. If you saw that, you’ve got a story to tell your grand kids.
