Saw this posted on Reddit/Facebook and thought others would find it interesting:

During his trip to Israel and Palestine in 2016, Aaron Weiss posted blogs to the mwY Facebook detailing his thoughts about the conflicts he witnessed there. The various posts taken as a whole, explain a TON of lyrics on [Untitled]. At times on the album, especially 'Wendy & Betsy', he is almost quoting his own blog in lyrical form.

Some examples:

Well they say the Institute made a perfected replica sword for the Ancient of Days.

"While wandering around the Jewish Quarter of old city Jerusalem, we stumbled unwittingly into the Temple Institute, an organization whose "ultimate goal is to see Israel rebuild the Holy Temple on Mount Moriah [the site of the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif]." They've already begun crafting the "sacred vessels" (e.g., a golden cup to collect the blood from animal sacrifices, a pitchfork for turning over the carcasses in the altar fire, a silver shovel for removing their ashes), have completed the uniform for the high priest, in careful conformity to biblical specifications, and many other objects to be used in the rebuilt temple; see "build we must" on black tee-shirt photo, attached. [My main gripe with their plan--other than the obvious, possible World War III--is the corresponding slaughter of innocent animals in this new temple. I find it objectionable enough for otherwise compassionate human beings today (those who could survive easily without meat) to kill defenseless animals for food, but whatever weird explanations I've heard for religious blood ritual, I don't find them at all convincing.]"

To which shepherd's field did which angels descend?

"We've celebrated Christmas twice here, once late night Dec. 24th and again with the Orthodox church on the eve of January 7th. We went to the monastery in Beit Sahour, a small Palestinian town on the eastern outskirts of Bethlehem built adjacent to one of the "Shepherd's Fields." These are the grounds believed to the site of the gospel scene where the angel appeared to tell the shepherds a Savior had been born (the location is contested; the Catholics claim a different site maintained by Franciscans)"

"A few days before we left Bethlehem a 21-year old boy from the Aida refugee camp was killed at a clash between Palestinian youth and Israeli military in the nearby town of Beit Jala. Apparently he was throwing stones at soldiers and was shot in the chest by a sniper. The next day was his funeral, a procession from the hospital to the Aida camp, which ended in another stormy demonstration facing the Israeli-West Bank barrier (a physical partition hundreds of miles long, mostly electrified fence w/ razor wire, but part 25 ft. high concrete wall). Some of the kids rolled a metal dumpster down the road that once connected Jerusalem to Hebron, using it and another metal structure as makeshift shields, peeking out with slingshots to launch rocks toward the wall. Israeli soldiers responded with loads of tear gas and a few loud explosion sounds I was told were stun grenades (non-lethal). I was unwittingly wearing a green bandana, which I was told affiliated me in that context with Hamas. One local photographer's advice: “take off the bandana. Between that and the beard, the soldiers will shoot you.” We heard a gunshot that she said was live ammunition (not the less-lethal rubber coated bullets the military often uses at demonstrations), so I left the commotion with no headband and went back to the apartment to meet up with my wife and daughter."

"Hebron/al-Khalīl is site of the Cave of the Patriarchs/Ibrahimi Mosque—a single structure built by king Herod around the burial place of Sarah/Abraham, Rebecca/Isaac, and Leah/Jacob. This structure houses a mosque and synagogue side-by-side, partitioned by a wall, each barely visible to the other through small windows--themselves separated by bulletproof glass--opening from both sections into Abraham’s tomb. Outside, nearby is the notorious Al-Shuhada St., formerly the bustling site of the Palestinian central market. The road has been closed to Palestinians since 1994, the doors to their shops welded shut. It's a ghost town now, no one there when we visited except two soldiers, our group photo being my probably ill-conceived attempt at coping with an extremely dismal scene."

Aaron mentioned the presence of IDF checkpoints in his blog:

"The city is home base to Palestine’s branch of Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT), who's mostly there to observe, document, and report. CPT volunteers respond to calls to attend when specific conflicts arise—e.g., a recent military raid on a family’s home—hoping an international presence might minimize soldiers' use of force. The volunteers also walk children to and from school “like a row of ducklings,” their favorite part of the day, keeping track of how many go through the checkpoints & how many come out, making sure everyone’s accounted for. If any kids are arrested and detained, CPT visits the police station requesting details, informs the parents (who often aren’t told otherwise), and advocates for their humane treatment."

The reference to losing his own self respect probably comes from the response to his 2016 blog posts:

"...to those who mentioned their loss of respect for us following my last post, I should clarify that my (Aaron's) messages here, like just about anything I say or believe, do not represent the band as a whole. I have no idea what anyone else in the group thinks about these issues--to my memory we've never once talked about it (which itself is telling). Now, as for losing respect for me personally, that makes better sense, and I'd say you're in good company: I can't count the times I've lost respect for myself!"

That's crazy to me. I think my top three this year are Rainbow Kitten Surprise, mwY, and Foxing. I saw RKS two nights ago, and five months ago, and both live shows were some of my favorites this year. This latest album is so damn good in my opinion. I actually just searched Rainbow Kitten Surprise because I never see any love for them on here and I was surprised.
