I think they've simplified it so that an attacker's handball in the buildup is now basically always a foul, but the defensive side of it seems a complete mess.

Oh for sure. It’s become a pretty bad tempered match as of late. Like MLS posting Gabriel shushing the crowd on Insta to a song that said “You talk too much, shut up” is so funny but unnecessary.

Feels like it stems from that match where Jorginho get elbowed in the back of the head by Guimaraes and then Havertz basically two footed someone lmao. How they both escaped reds that day is a mystery.

Love a random rivalry developing tbf. And you’ve battered us regularly in recent years lol. At least this one feels like it has real bite to it, unlike when Villa fans tried to start a rivalry with us.

Woltemade is fucking class, btw. Feels like he could be absolutely world class of given the time to develop. Newcastle went around the houses but I think ended up with the best replacement they could possibly hope for.

    Not a looker, mind.

I think this fixture got spicy earlier than that. Basically the first Howe vs Arteta version of this game started it with Newcastle being a bit of a handful and also wasting loads of time. We've played on annoying your team ever since and it mostly works. I felt we were a bit softer yesterday (maybe a worry it had become predictable), although that early "tackle" by Joelinton on Saka was a disgrace. Unsure whether our tactics took Joelinton and Bruno out of the game or whether Arteta was smart enough to keep them out of it.

It's definitely becoming one of my favourite fixtures of the season though.

He is a lovely great lump. Turning circle of an aircraft carrier. I think he's probably been dropped in the deep end more than we'd have liked. Having Wissa available would have taken some pressure off him.

There was a story in the press that he's brought a friend to live with him in Newcastle, because he doesn't have a gf, so he may as well bring a friend along instead. He's got all the makings of a cult hero, just hoping Howe can develop him into a monster.

  5. I just don’t think the whole excuse of “it deflected off my body first” has any weight when the player goes flying in with his arm straight up, making his body as big as possible.

To me, the deflection negates a handball when it’s unintentional and when there’s nothing the defender could do about it. This play doesn’t fit that criteria. He could’ve prevented it by not going into the challenge like that.

With that said, Arsenal probably should’ve had a penalty earlier. So it kinda evens out. I just think this decision was more egregious lol

West Ham are so appallingly bad at dealing with crosses and corners.

What a finish. Everton going to pieces at the back.

    Fair play to Jose.

Enzo went to take a corner and the Benfica fans absolutely pelted him with objects. Jose matched over and told off the fans himself.

Bodø/Glimt have been terrific. Piss poor penalty miss, though.

The problem with this new format is that even with Spurs and Liverpool losing, there doesn’t really like any jeopardy

Bob on. It requires an absolute catastrophe for teams to miss out when 24 technically "make it".

Wasn't able to watch the game intently at work but in the spare moments Danso looked absolutely lost out there. Amongst others to be sure. How we snuck a point out of that mess is beyond me. Yikes.

Counterpoint: you kept going until the end and got a point.

The "best" teams find a way.
