Fair play to Jamie. Cutting through the bullshit and being real even if it hurts him to do so. The full clip is pretty scathing and he goes for the mentality of everyone bar Ange.

He’s right about the mentality difference. And it would worry me if I was of a Spurs persuasion that good players will see that and wonder why they should sign for a club with that attitude. They need to hope Ange’s winners mentality rubs off on them.

  4. It’s not a good look but think it’ll mostly blow over with a win on Sunday.

Fans are so weird. The entitlement that some carry is just absurd. Don’t get me wrong, fans are a massive part of any club. And the club should be grateful for those fans. But how can you sit on your high horse talking about how much of a fan you are and how important you are to the club and then want the team to lose? To the point where you’re actually mad at the manager for trying to win!

Insanity. Glad it’s over. And can’t wait for this weekend so everyone just moves on.

If Southgate goes to United, or gets sacked after a disappointing Euros, who do England go for?

  12. They won’t vote to scrap it, right? As frustrating as VAR can be at times, going back to how it used to be after experiencing VAR, it’d be a disaster lol every game would be full of even more drama.

Unless the significantly improve it by getting independent VAR reviewers in I think they should scrap it. It barely works as is bar the most obvious incidents and even then it sometimes doesn’t

  14. From the article:

They listed a host of repercussions, such as:
    • Impact on goal celebrations and the spontaneous passion that makes football special
    • Frustration and confusion inside stadiums due to lengthy VAR checks and poor communication
    • A more hostile atmosphere with protests, booing of the Premier League anthem and chants against VAR
    • Overreach of VAR’s original purpose to correct clear and obvious mistakes, now overanalysing subjective decisions and compromising the game’s fluidity and integrity
    • Diminished accountability of on-field officials, due to the safety net of VAR, leading to an erosion of authority on the pitch
    • Continued errors despite VAR, with supporters unable to accept human error after multiple views and replays, damaging confidence in officiating standards
    • Disruption of the Premier League’s fast pace with lengthy VAR checks and more added time, causing matches to run excessively long
    • Constant discourse about VAR decisions often overshadowing the match itself, and tarnishing the reputation of the league
    • Erosion of trust and reputation, with VAR fuelling completely nonsensical allegations of corruption

Some of these are valid arguments. I’ve never understood why they don’t communicate what is being checked more clearly to fans as it is happening. It’s very easy to do. I hate sitting in the stadium with the game paused and not knowing what is happening.

The lengthy checks breaking up the pace of the game and potentially contributing to more muscle injuries is another thing I’ve seen some fans complain about. I doubt there’s any data to prove that it’s an issue, but I do think the overall flow of the game being disrupted is an unfortunate consequence and the pauses alone can have an impact in the game.

The parts about overreach from initial purpose, diminishing credibility / accountability from on-field officials, and the fact that they still get things wrong fairly often….all more valid reasons for it to at least be modified.

I also assume it’s more putting pressure on all involved to fix the mess that it is rather than a true attempt to scrap it

  16. Automated offside and goal-line technology is easy to implement and takes out the potential human error. Both provide quick resolutions during the incident. I’d be fine with just using these two things and the rest is just how we used to do it.

Aren't PL referees all British? Is that the norm? Are Bundesliga refs all German, La Liga all Spanish, etc? I think VAR is often so bad but, at least in my mind, a lot of issues could be solved with competency. With the PL being the preeminent domestic league with all the money in the world, surely hiring better referees, even if not British, could help to some degree

There was mention on a podcast recently of how there’s a very small possibility we have a Juventus situation in the PL, and titles are stripped and given to other teams.

I realised I wasn’t entirely sure who that would actually be. So I looked. What surprised me was that despite United being a sort of hilarious mess for a decade, they may end up inheriting a ton of titles.

11/12 - Man Utd (was MNC)
    12/13 - Man Utd
13/14 - Man Utd (was MNC)
    14/15 - Chelsea
    15/16 - Leicester
    16/17 - Chelsea
17/18 - Man Utd (was MNC)
    18/19 - Liverpool (was MNC)
    19/20 - Liverpool
20/21 - Man Utd (was MNC)
    21/22 - Liverpool (was MNC)
    22/23 - Arsenal (was MNC)
    23/24 - Arsenal (likely MNC)

  19. Damnit. The year we finished 2nd wasn’t a City year! Would be a hilarious way to break the trophy drought.

That would be ours, thank you very much; although I'm not much inclined in hindsight for Brendan Rodgers to be a Liverpool title winner either.

Not sure scrapping VAR completely is for the best, mostly because issues pre-VAR will likely manifest again. I think proposing a time limit so decisions can't be mulled on beyond "clear and obvious" could be useful.

No, give it to United. Moyes, Mourinho, and Solskjær being title-winning Manchester United managers would be quite funny.
