This is why I didn’t understand the people mad about sitting back against Liverpool. We haven’t today and their attackers have too much space against a back line that has 3 out of 4 backups playing.

 

Defending non-stop for 90 minutes every game makes you tired.

 

I think they also get tired scrambling around out of position every time Liverpool gets close

 

If Kane is out for a while, we’re gonna be lucky to finish 5th

Thought we were outstanding. One of our best performances of the season. After the early disallowed goal for Spurs, we dominated every facet of this game.

 

Felt like we needed another strong CM like Sissoko instead of Winks. Liverpool was able to move the ball and transition into attack with ease. Hojbjerg did all he could but we needed another physical presence out there.

 

Lamela on for Kane was a head scratcher too. He doesn’t score goals. Vinny would’ve been more of a threat.

 

Yeah we were able to move the ball through midfield fairly comfortably in both halves.

I thought Mourinho's approach was a bit of a head scratcher to be honest. Playing a back five was obviously intended to stop the centre backs having to cover as much space but your backline wasn't coordinated at all (see your mess of a defensive line on the first goal) and it gave us lots of space to move the ball in midfield. The change to a back four at half time was understandable but you played so open and gave us lots of space behind to run into. Agree with your earlier post - you should have tried to lock the game down, given the problems we've had against that approach in recent weeks and the players you were missing at the back. You still may well have lost but it was a better idea in the circumstances.

 

Pretty much agree with all of this. I think the idea of this formation in the future. We have the WBs for it. But we don’t have the CBs for it right now.

And yeah, we played more open in the second half which I thought was strange considering Kane went out. I thought that’d be even more reason to sit back. Once he left the Liverpool CBs held their line and weren’t baited up. The first half they did and Son was a threat the entire half. Second half that was gone. Another reason why I would’ve rather seen Vinny come in over Lamela.

You beat me to saying it. They've only got a few days to do so, but they now HAVE to. He had made a few big defensive plays today especially with that one tackle when Son seemed to have an angle on him, and it was nice seeing an actual natural CB in there for once.

 

Why in the world is Liverpool not trying to go all-in on Upamecano?

 

What’s the rule here? Does that back foot make it ok or is he handling it outside the box?

It’s sad that we need a CB as bad as Liverpool do and all of our CBs are healthy lol
