  1. The ball was headed backwards, deflected off a Sporting defender.

  2. But seriously, give Bryan Gil more minutes. He brings energy to the team when no one else does.

When Lewy handed the ball back to the official after the penalty was overturned, it was obvious he was thinking “why the hell did I leave”

Sadly (for you, not me admittedly) that doesn’t matter.

The ball going backwards is a common misconception regarding offsides. It’s about the players position relative to the ball, not the trajectory. So Kane is ahead of the ball, therefor he can be offside even though it was passed backwards. Weird quirk I guess.

As for the defender touching it, it only matters if it’s viewed as an intentional attempt to play the ball, which this isn’t because it’s just headed at him from super close range. So then they just had to work out if he was offside, which he was.

Correct decision by the letter of the law, although again my view is if you can’t tell if it’s offside in 30 seconds, give the goal.

the ball going backwards thing is one of those silly things commentators say all the time despite having no relevance to the offside rule.

Should point out that video is a comedy sketch, following the comments in the article from the actual Foreign Secretary

  13. Yeah, it’s more clear now. Still absurd that a backwards pass that’s deflected off a defenders hand in the box ends up benefiting the defensive team lol

  14. The Athletic is reporting that Spurs are “watching” Oblak as a successor to Lloris. I’d imagine that’d be very expensive.

Lovely goal by Xavi Simons there, some great close control

Edit - or not. Offside. First disallowed one was a nice finish by Gakpo too

Christ PSV need to stay onside. 3 offside goals today and all were obvious.
