Oh ffs first weekend of the season and we’re still playing on Sunday rather than Saturday.

 

Quite surprised that Newcastle are seriously in the running for Maddison. I didn't really expect us to be going for any statement buys this summer.

 

I find it odd that Newcastle have spent so relatively little this summer. I thought they would have spent £100m already honestly.

Barca should find out today who can be registered with all the new financial deals. There’s still one more “lever” that can be pulled, but they’ve made almost 780m off the first three so may not have to.

 

I'm not that shocked. I think the new group running the show are looking to do a kind of ground up rebuild and just buying loads of players, particularly for stupid fees, isn't especially practical. It's not like we haven't seen plenty of teams try that and find it doesn't really work. I also don't think going mad with signings suits Eddie Howe. There's been a concerted effort to get rid of the Championship quality players and get the staffing right as well. Ashley's regime did not leave us in a good position in any sense outside the balance sheet.

I suspect they may also have an eye on FFP as well, as I would assume they're targeting European spots in the next few years.

Also, we've spent £60m this window on top of the £95m or whatever it was in January. It's a fair old spend.

 

Oh I totally agree that it is sensible and a great way to build something. I just didn’t expect it, if I’m honest.

What is this "positive" you speak of?

I honestly can't remember. The only good season (ignoring bulldozing the Championship twice) we've had in the last 20 years was that wacky Pardew year where we somehow finished 5th. Thing is, we didn't strengthen the team going into the next season, so even holding onto our good players didn't feel very confidence inspiring, as we had a small squad with a massive fixture list...

 

Probably on my own little island here but I don’t really rate Maddison that highly. Good player, but not really a next step signing for most teams.
