Who’s around for MLS Cup? I got my booster last night and it’s bodying me, so who knows if I’ll be awake through it. I passed out in the middle of Liverpool-Villa.

New York looking good through the first 20 min. Taking some time to adjust to the pitch and conditions but Deila has to be pleased so far.

This ref needs to start flashing some yellows.

damn. was kinda pulling for portland on this one but NYC has dominated so far.

  9. Sounds like they basically confirmed Vegas as the final MLS expansion team. I think a team will do great there.

Vegas sucks as a sports town. Transient and super reliant on tourism. I went out for the Ravens/raiders game to start the season. Week 1, Monday night football, first game in the stadium with fans ever. Worst tailgate scene I’ve ever witnessed.

  11. I don’t think I’d agree it’s a bad sports town. The hockey team is a better example because it was an organic startup, not a team relocating. I lived there when they announced the team and preparing for the inaugural season and that city was hyped. A huge population with a lot of people who have been waiting for “their” team. A team will do very well there.

I thought it was brutal, but you bring up a good point of homegrown vs relocated. Large Hispanic population probably would help w supporting a soccer team, as well.

  13. I think the tourism factor actually helps them tbh. Like, they’ll have a strong home base. But there is literally always tourists there and people will likely schedule vacations around their team being in Vegas. It happens with the Raiders and Golden Knights already.

The only concern I’d have is the weather. Summer matches there would be miserable. I’d hope they make the stadium with a retractable roof.

I think the tourism is good, but I meant they may be too reliant on tourism and not enough of a home base. Other destination cities like New Orleans and Nashville have plenty of home fans too, whereas I always considered Vegas more of a transient city with fans from other places who stay for a bit then leave, rather than a city of lifers who grew up rooting for the home team.

I don’t have any real basis for that, I guess, other than knowing a bunch of people who moved to Vegas and then left, but not knowing a single person who was actually raised there.

NYCFC midfield quietly bossing this game has stopped everything Portland has tried to do.

That goal shouldn’t count at all. VAR is useless.

Agreed but not surprised. Ref has hardly called those all night... more to your point.

This ref refuses to call obvious fouls. It’s like watching a team of Casemiros

But it also doesn't help that the City players, and Chanot in particular, have a tendency to go down rather easily from time to time. Regrettably, that impacts a refs willingness to call fouls when they actually occur.

And if the sideline reporter is correctly recounting the explanation from the refs that the Portland player was looking at the ball and therefore it wasn't a foul, then I guess it's fine to put your elbow into an opponent's head so long as you're looking at the ball. /s

Also, this is one of the reasons I think having a neutral site for MLS cup is the way to go. This match in Austin would have been cool as hell.
