Sorry but thats a stupid generalization. I guess most of you dont know what Ultras are.

    That midfield is really underwhelming.

I’ve been escorted out of a stadium in Italy to receive protection from Ultras I think I know what I’m talking about thanks though

I have been escorted several times out of stadia and had to run away from opposing "fans" countless times. Still this has nothing to do with "Ultras". You might wanna look up the meaning of that word. I don't agree with everything Ultras are doing but the people we are talking about here are not Ultras.

    Ultras:
The actions of ultras groups are occasionally extreme and may be influenced by political ideologies such as conservatism or socialism, or views on racism, ranging from avowed nationalists to anti-fascist. In some instances, this goes to the point where the passionate and loyal support of one's team becomes secondary to the theoretical ideology of the ultras phenomenon. In recent decades, the culture has become a focal point for the movement against the commercialisation of sports and football in particular.

There are ultras that attend my local game and there is definitely a difference between fans and the actions of those. I thinks that's beside the point of the original post though...

    A stupid generalisation in itself.

Not really pertinent to an argument about understanding ultras.

I think German and Northern European ultras tend to be a little different from those in the South and those in Eastern Europe. I suspect that's their point maybe?

English ‘ultras’ are an utter embarrassment. Leave your giant flags at home ffs.

I've never really heard of English fans being referred to as ultras. Games here just don't seem to go that extra mile to create a truly intimidating atmosphere for the away team.

    I do not exist.

Yeah, I didn't think we had ultras. We do have some hooligans that follow the national team though.

Crystal Palace are the only ones that take it seriously I think. There’s a few lower league teams try and do it but just give up.

We briefly had an ultras section at Wednesday which consisted of a group of about 40 people, mainly in their mid teens stood up chanting and throwing in the odd unusual dance move.

I thought we'd done a fairly good job of stamping those clowns out. Get the impression now that the average England follower is a bit too well off or middle aged to get involved with that.

I once ended up in a pub (think it was called the Beehive, up in Hillsborough), surrounded by what we believed was Wednesday's firm. That was an intense pre-game.

Been to a number of games at different grounds and different clubs over the years and I've never really seen English fans doing anything other than singing loud and trying to mug off opposition fans (in terms of creating an atmosphere, at least).

Millwall have a reputation. There were a lot of arrests when they were up in Sheffield last.

Wasn't there violence/arrests surrounding the Netherlands friendly recently? And Euro 2016 was pretty bad again. It's a shame as it did seem to have been stamped out for a number of years.

My worst experience in the UK was going to see Sheffield United vs Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup a few years back. It's the only time I've felt intimated as an away fan. After we lost, the United fans invaded the pitch and started throwing flares into the away end and aggressively chanting. It was not nice (but interesting to watch - we were right at the top in the upper tier so less likely to get hit).

Not sure you'd consider the Millwall fans as ultras. More, idiots...

I think that recent stuff with England has some mitigating circumstances. They held an England Netherlands friendly in Amsterdam, on a Friday night. There were English arrests, but I don't know if that was entirely football related.

The stuff at Euro 2016 sounded like the England fans were the victims (unless I'm forgetting something). That was the one where the Russian fans turned up like a militia and started beating the stuffing out of England fans who were sat on terraces having dinner and drinks. There was maybe some more trouble after that, but I think there was a feeling that the police in France had pretty much left the England fans to take a beating, which didn't help.

Edit: Wiki suggests that the English were in trouble with the police before the Russian thing happened, so I may just be talking shit.

Yeah, I do remember hearing about the Russians but a quick Google and it seems there was at least some organisation on our part: Euro 2016 violence: police release pictures have been released of 72 England football fans suspected of having been involved in "highly organised" violence in Marseille.

Recalling all that Russian fan Euro 2016 stuff makes me wonder how many counts of violence we are going to hear about during this World Cup. And I'm expecting the usual racist chanting from the ignorant Russian fans.

I think it might end up being a very strange and uncomfortable tournament.

The Russians will be racist, Mexicans will chant their puto chant. Fifa will say "oh no this is bad!" Not do anything about it and then declare it's the most successful World Cup ever when it finishes.

    Fulham 2 - Aston Villa 1 (ET)
    United 2 - Chelsea 0
    Real Madrid 4 - Liverpool 2

Yeah Britain doesn't really have Ultras. It's not that kind of football culture.

That said, Millwall are basically all ultras at times, and matches between them and West Ham are sort of organised brawls.

Relatives of mine were legit football hooligan in the 80's, part of the 'casual' culture that it was known as at the time. They used to go to games between clubs they barely supported just to take part in the fights etc. but mainly it was Chelsea they'd go to. The stories I've heard are fucking unbelievable (they and many others who were around that culture of the time all agreed that one set of fans were the worst, above even Millwall and West Ham who have a lasting reputation for hooliganism - Liverpool) Loads of exaggeration though i'll bet, every club had savage hooligans because it was the culture at the time. We're lucky it doesn't exist so much in the UK now but it definitely did!
