This is what happens when you buy a fantastic young player and play him in a role that doesn't suit him. He needs a good DM alongside him like he had a Gladbach.

I'm telling you now. Watch a decent manager who can actually coach players come to Arsenal and make Xhaka a key piece of our team. He's getting clearly no defensive coaching and being played in a position and role that doesn't suit him. Because of this he makes mistakes and it furthers the narrative around him.

 

what exactly is his position? he's not a defensive midfielder, he's not an attacking midfielder and he seems too immobile to be a centre midfielder.

Not saying he's anywhere near that standard by the way, I'm just saying there are many ways of playing positions as we have seen.

 

I mean Pirlo wasn't exactly a centre midfielder was he.

I just don't see what Xhaka brings. His passing is decent but not amazing. His defensive work is abysmal. His off the ball movement non existent. Tackling is average. Shooting, tbh I don't think i've ever seen him shoot so I don't know. I just don't see where or how he would be a top midfielder. What is his position in the midfield?

 

You clearly haven't seen much of him then. His longe range passing is fantastic, and he has fantastic vision. Alongside that his long range shooting is really good and he's scored several long range goals. He's great from set pieces too and I think with the right coaching he honestly could turn around his lapses in concentration (which are what he suffers from the most.

That said, yeah he's slow as shit and needs to sort out those concentration issues. He's been asked to play a DM role because Wenger is mental, when he shouldn't be that at all.

 

Fair enough. Under a stronger manager with a better game plan he might become a great midfielder.

Whilst I say this, they absolutely must use a system that will fit him. It's possible the new manager thinks he is too difficult to accommodate in our playing style, which I myself am wondering. He could be great but I suspect he maybe doesn't us as a team. It's hard to know.
