Agree that it's a good point but the narrative that this was one of those typical mourinho ' i can go to any ground in the world and get a 0-0' is off, this wasn't one of those, they conceded a lot of quality chances (which isn't a hallmark of his classic 0-0's). overall point better summed up by this graph

agreed with the first few sentences here. also think that, considering the talent in the united squad, to think that they have to play for a 0-0 draw to get a result is absurd. mou will never change though

Yeah I get that. I'm not necessarily buying into the argument online that Liverpool dominated. They had more possession, but there was only the Matip chance and possibly the Can chance which actually scared me. I think a lot of United play was last man or skin of their teeth, but I had confidence in United's defence to hold out, and I think Mou did as well. Sure, we conceded more chances, but I think we were content to do so knowing the issues Liverpool have been having finishing and confidence in our ability to get the ball away.

as a United fan, are you happy with this setup against bigger teams? (not judging, genuinely asking)

I mean Liverpool can't score anyway so why defend against them.

We're always shit at Liverpool, bar Gerrards last game against us. This is no different.

Without Pogba and coming out of a FIFA break, that was a great United team performance to secure a point away at a rival.

Honestly, yes. The question is, would I have preferred if we had gone out all guns blazing, played directly to the strengths of Liverpool and lost, or have played defensively and got a point - I'd say the point every time.

We played badly, there's no argument, but I don't think the set up was the biggest issue. When we set up similarly, such as Chelsea last season, it has been shown we can win that way. You can't impose your style on every team you play. Sometimes you have to adapt to an opponent's style and limit them. At the end of the day, we got a clean sheet, kept what we came with, took points away from a rival, so I'm content.

I do think I'm in the minority on all of this mind.

interesting. i think you're right that it's fairly split in fans that seem to be content with this set up, as long as it brings the point, and fans annoyed by thinking its "below" a United team to play like this. interesting stuff either way. maybe there's a middle ground between this and going all out/guns blazing? at the end of the day if it helps you guys contend/win the league no one will really remember

a good example is if the us sets up to do what United did in Trinidad we’re in the World Cup. but we attacked and Trinidad had insane possession and attacking chances and we all know what happened there.

and obviously liverpool’s attack is quite better than Trinidad’s

Oh totally. I think at the end of the day, United will probably be content with the point and Liverpool will feel like they should've won it. Be interesting to see the return fixture to see if anything changes.

Honestly agree with this. We're still not the United team of old. We're still not as good as we could and should be. Mourinho knows this, we have what we have and we need to work with that. We were missing our best player, one who plays in probably the most important position of the pitch for us. It was a bad performance by all accounts ( I only saw the last 15) but it's not a bad result and after the 90 minutes the result is all that matters. The amount of shit we've gotten down the years with Fergie in charge when we didn't play well but got a result at a top team means this is no different to any of them.

I would like to say despite our early league position the goal is still top 4.

We've always gone away to big teams and rivals in a cautious manner, even under Ferguson. No one remembers because at the end of the day we were challenging for titles as you say.

appreciate your point but not sure i love the comparison considering US can't defend like United, T&T scored an early goal in that which opened up the game, a draw for a US a lot more meaningful, and United have loads of attacking talent.

I think the real test would have been what would we have done if Liverpool scored. Can we transition from cautious defensive play to smart attacking play.

It's genuinely hard to say if I'm happy with performances like that, I would be obviously happier if we pumped them and scored 6 while playing like 11 Messi's but that isn't realistic. I always think going into big away games I'll be happy with a draw or win. What we absolutely did not need today was a loss given our upcoming fixtures this month.

The game away at Mexico says we can defend that way imo

The Andy Carroll red card is hilarious. How fucking stupid do you have to be doing the same thing twice in two minutes?

Stoke score a second. 3-2 now.
