I think the only thing this has in common with mother! is the broadness and the cinemascore haha I have a hard time describing my feelings for this movie because it's definitely clouded by being in a headspace where I'm cool never seeing violence/psychological trauma against women in a movie ever again
Never seen Mother and could not care less about it but I did enjoy this movie quite a bit. All the scenes in the woods at the beginning looked so much like some of the early stuff landscapes in Annihilation.
I think it's not only comparable in vibe and intent to challenge the audience (thematically and visually), but also in the theme of burden consistently experienced by women all the way down to the biblical references.
Wheeeew this was a trip. Loved it. Scared the living shit out of me tbh and the last 15 mins or so was so deeply upsetting and surprisingly gross. Gotta think about that ending for a while.
To whoever's seen it, just one question: How scared and disturbed were you? Ignoring how divisive or nonsensical the plot might seem, how effective would you say it is as a horror movie?
It's effective. The first hour is a good level of wtf meets home invasion psychological horror. The last act is pretty off the charts disturbing in a visual sense.
Man, you're all making me want to see this even more. I love creepy and gory and I think Mother! is great.
my wife didn’t hate it so much as she was entirely bored. kind of the inverse of how i felt: entertained but overall a pretty empty movie
Annihilation, Ex Machina & Devs are three of my favorite pieces of media of the past decade. Not suuuuuper looking forward to this based off what I’ve heard so far, but still gonna go see it.
I think if you’re a fan of Garland you will enjoy this on some level. It’s certainly unlike anything he’s done but it’s still got lots of his signature vibes.
