Going to try to catch this Saturday, unsure if I want to double feature it with The Northman or The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
be careful of reviews because even big outlets are being kinda flippant with spoilers (not really plot but the topics of discussion the movie will have) Still prepared to be thoroughly confused after tonight though
This is nowhere near as complex/confusing of an ending as reviewers have treated it. But holy fuck Alex Garland is king, definitely need to watch a few more times
That is an accurate way to put it, idk I don't see how it's a divisive ending. Wasn't crazy about the first act and a half but after that it gets insane. I hate ranking but I'd go Men>>Ex Machina>Annihilation
This is where I'm at right now too. I wasn't sure what to think when I left the theater, but the more I think about it, the more I like the layers of it.
i liked this but probably least of his work since ex machina. the sliders felt off on the lore. too much to the point of diluting the message of the film but also not enough to fully feel warranted. odd. wonderful imagery and performances though.
This was lit lol some choices I wasn't quite sure about (the schoolboy, the ending) but it really came together for me the more I sat with it. Beautifully shot, well-acted, definitely effective and unsettling. The audience was audibly reacting to the body horror shit and I let out a Ric flair "wooooooo"
Excited to hear your thoughts! There is some mythology stuff I haven't quite wrapped my head around but it's not essential to engage with and the rest really worked for me. The right level of like, heady for me without being completely over my head. Garland seems to strike that balance really well.
man (sorry...), i wished i was into this. there's definitely flourishes of the movie it could've been, but i feel like there's a lot of items where garland either went too far or not enough. hope the weird dude sitting close to where i was that took a picture of the a24 logo before the movie started wasn't as disappointed as i was
