It's a Garland film...I want to like it but based on that trailer it seems it might have one of the worst tropes in the horror genre that a lot of movies still include in for some reason - a protagonist who puts themselves in a weird/creepy situation where lots of predictably and increasingly weird/creepy things happen and they STILL stay there lol. There are very few movies that pull this off well, and unfortunately the amount of "you shoulda already nope'd the fuck out" moments in that two minutes alone makes me wonder how underwhelming this might be, but we'll see what happens come May 20th.
I don't know how you could infer that much from a two-minute trailer for a film we essentially still have no plot for...considering his track record, I couldn't be less worried
Listen I realize Garland's approaching that mid 2000's Chris Nolan level of critic-proof sacredness for movie buffs so takes like this are be expected sometimes, but do you seriously think it's not a fair assumption given what's shown in that trailer? :p
Very weird to assume people aren’t trashing a trailer because they’re trying to be cool film bros or whatever lol c’mon For the record the trailer is good as hell
I literally don't know the premise of the movie and have seen the trailer a few times so I feel like making any assumptions about the story is kind of strange lol
Yeah, and Garland hasn’t really ever been direct in how the plot of his films unfold. He’s earned this respect precisely because he understands the tropes that we expect as viewers, and plays with them. He’s not in the realm of being immune to criticism yet at all though, people weren’t necessarily fond of Devs.
And not sure if you’d want the spoiler but someone on Reddit had a really interesting approximation of what the films actually about, if you’d want me to dm you
Are y'all ok? It's a trailer - last i checked these things kinda exist solely to evoke hype and questions and speculation about what a movie's story will be. I'm hyped, but also concerned for reasons that aren't unfounded. So before hitting that reply button with the energy of a retaliation, can we maybe keep in mind no conclusions about how good or bad the film is have been expressed yet?
i assumed until halfway through the first post they had seen a screener or something. making that judgment off a two minute trailer is wild lol
Brozer how is it a judgment to speculate and express concern about a trope possibly being in a film via some evidence in the trailer? I even said "we'll see what happens when the movie's released" lmao Like if someone's watching a trailer for a comedy and says "Eh, did that seem funny to you? The humor in that trailer makes it seem like the movie won't hit the right notes for me, but let's wait see how it turns out", are they making a hard judgment about the quality of the film, or feeling skeptical based on the footage they've seen?
What? No, i don't think so. Why do you think it looks like a comedy? Edit: Now that you mention it, there's at least one recent psychological horror film with the "going to an obvious culty lions den and choosing to stay despite it being an obvious culty lion's den" trope that did end up shifting tone to comedy a lot more than you'd expect going by the trailer (Midsommar), so maybe? Wouldn't say I'd expect it based on the footage shown so far, but we'll find out May 20 ^_^
My gf is quite terrified of this movie based on the most recent trailer. After I showed her she just said, “So it’s a movie about a bunch of guys gaslighting one distressed woman? That does sound awful”
