Emperor of Sand is so good, Steambreather has been stuck in my head all day. They don’t have a bad album.
Show Yourself is great but I LOATHE the lyric “you’re not as safe as far as I can tell - and I can tell”. The double “I can tell” is just plain bad. But the good thing Is I don’t listen to Mastodon for A+ lyrics.
running through the discography. got through leviathan today. remission is so underrated. they were coming into their own with the vocals but the riffs are insane. leviathan is one of the best of the genre so far this century.
i think sleeping giant is my fave mastodon track and then brent follows with the absolutely insane riff in capillarian crest
Hand of Stone->This Mortal Soil->Siberian Divide is one of my favorite stretches in their discography. The riff that starts about a minute into This Mortal Soil is ridiculously catchy.
Remission and Leviathan are two of my favourite albums in any genre. The riffs and the drumming is just perfect.
One of my favorite thing about Mastodon is that, through all of their albums, Brann has such great drum tone. None of the slick triggered bullshit that most bands of the metal genre have. Yes, they’re clean, but that’s because they’re tuned very well and not overly processed. Maybe I notice these thing because I’m a drummer, but it’s 100% true.
i didn’t like The Hunter initially and put off listening for a while but this is better than i remembered. Dry Bone Valley fucking rips.
Crack the Skye overall is still my favorite with BM right behind. While I don’t dislike The Hunter the step away from their prog tendencies definitely hurt it imo. Then you have the fabulous bounce back of OMRtS, and EoS. OMRtS I feel doesn’t get enough credit. There’s some fantastic moments on it.
