I cannot get over how good Brent sounds singing on this... I got Chris Stapleton vibes during the intro of The Beast, and I mean that in the best possible way.
Idk after just one listen this slaps, AND is super proggy which is no small feat. They’ve really perfected this type of style they do so well. I’m assuming Soundgarden guy did the solo on Had It All?
I think I need to give this a few more listens. After one, there are pieces that I like but something isn’t clicking yet. The mix/level of the drums against the guitars is distracting. Lots of meandering songs also. I’ll give it a few more listens as I love everything Mastodon has put out so maybe I’m just not in the right mindset for it today.
The rhythm guitar at 3 minutes of The Crux is extremely similar to the chorus of Coheed’s The Crowing. Was driving me nuts because o knew it sounded familiar, haha.
There are a few Brann choruses I would certainly prefer Brent in. At this point though I get the feeling that Brent prefers to just play guitar though.
Like can you imagine Brent wailing "All that I have sacrificed is leaving me and letting go now I don't want to leave you here alone among the wind and weeping" On "Eyes of Serpents"
it’s weird how stuff changes. for the longest time it was brent had the worst voice and sang too much not saying i disagree. love his voice
this is so god damn good. perfect evolution from emperor of sand, taking it somewhere darker and more... ahem... grim. doesnt even feel like a double album clocking in at 90 minutes. keeps you enthralled the entire time. cant wait to spend more time with it and pick apart the finer details because there's a LOT going on here, just layers and layers of sound. fucking love it. the prog kings return.
I definitely need to give this more spins, but after one listen I like it a lot. Though, I'll echo what others have said that it needs more of Brent's vocals. I don't dislike Brann or Troy, but his voice is so distinctive.
Yeah I listened to Crack the Skye today for the first time in a while, and it’s striking how much all of their clean singing have improved.
