Mastodon - Hushed and Grim (October 29th, 2021) • Page 11

  1. Yeah after the conversation about him we had a while back, I got curious and read interviews and stuff with him. The impression I got from what he'd say is it feels like his heart hadn't been in it for a long time, that he hates touring and that if he could, he would rather do his own thing out of spotlight, playing bluegrass or whatever, than do Mastodon full time. If your long time bandmate and friend is *that* over it, at some point it puts the other guys in a tough spot so it doesn't surprise me.

Brent's voice and guitar playing are very distinctive and add a unique flavor to the band's music. However, it's clear he hasn't been excited about being in the band for some time, so I'm looking forward to seeing the remaining members move forward uninhibited by a member that isn't fully committed. Selfishly just kinda sad that I'm finally seeing them live for the first time this year and it won't be with Brent.

Saw Mastodon on The Infinite Arc Tour with Coheed last week. Out of the 5 times I've seen them, they've never been better. Played a really cool setlist with some fun deep cuts, too (guessing that's because they only played 1 Brent-lead song). They said something along the lines of "We have 2 more weeks on this tour, then we are going home to record a record. Does that sound good to you?" As much as I loved Brent's contributions in this band, I am hopeful for the band's future.

are we still lucky to be here? Prestigious

^Sounds like they're reinvigorated as a band...sometimes kicking out the problem member can do wonders.

Saw them for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and while I'm disappointed as a longtime fan that I never got a chance to see them with Brent, the renewed energy that was apparent on stage made me so happy to see. I'm so excited for the new chapter of the band.

How did Nicks solos sound? Did he just play Brent’s or put his own spin on it?

They played Ember City in Lexington, which has multiple solo sections in it, and dude ripped it doing his own thing.

On the songs I was familiar with, I think he mostly did his own thing. Sounded good though.

I suspect these guys will continue on as a three piece and I love that for them, but if they do lean on some contributors, I'd love to see Kim Thayil hang around with these guys more often.

might come off a little gimmicky but, i wouldn't mind if they had a guest lead guitarist on each track of the new album. kim thayil, jerry cantrell, gina gleason from baroness, etc.

Definitely put his own spin on it. It was strange not hearing the solos I was used to, but I think he did a good job of making them his own while still respecting the originals.
