Nope. The premise of Born Again is that Kingpin discovers Daredevil's identity and ruins his life, and then Matt has to climb his way back from rock bottom. (Maggie, who's mentioned at the end, is a nun and Matt's mother.) I gotta reread it to remember the specifics, but it has nothing to do with his vision. From what I recall, no major Daredevil story deals with restored vision.

The more I think about it, the more I hate this thing's story, but I still loved it.

Being built off the worst parts of Marvel Netflix so far (Iron Fist and half of Daredevil S2) certainly didn't help, though they certainly could've built something strong off that foundation. The whole Hand thing just never really clicked. Doesn't help that this somehow used Elektra even worse than Daredevil S2 did. That whole final stretch with her and Matt was terrible.

Still, this felt fun in the same way that the best CW crossovers have. As much as the worst story elements resembled some of Arrow's worst choices, seeing these casts interact was a delight. Hanging out with Jessica, Misty, Luke, Claire, Matt, Colleen, Karen, Trish, and Malcolm in the same hour was alone enough to make this worth my time.

I will say that, while the story didn't land, the pacing of the first half was fantastic. I love that the first episode felt intentionally disjointed, like an episode of each show just got haphazardly edited together. Going from that to the slow collision of episode 2, culminating in the final sequence of episode 3 was perfect. Then the fourth episode was a great time to have everyone spend extended time together for the first time and learn what they were dealing with. With a more interesting threat to deal with in the second half, this would've been perfect.

In a weird place where I want to give this a shot, but I also haven't watched JJ, Iron Fist, or Luke Cage, and the back half of DD Season 2 was so dreadful I stopped watching around episode 8.

Thought this was great for the most part. Loved that Misty, Colleen, and Claire were involved as much as they were. A bit more Trish and Malcolm would have been nice. The interactions between the main four characters was a lot of fun. I did like how strong they made Elektra, but agree that the last part with her and Matt was ridiculous.

For some reason that final shot gave me the vibe that Matt was going to be able to see again. May be interesting but I don't think they'll do it.

I did know who Maggie was. That was exciting to hear.

Yuuup. She changed her story a million times within like 2 minutes in that scene lmfao. Half the time she's saying she doesn't love him and acts truly evil, then out of nowhere apologizing saying she loves him, back and forth. It took so long to tell if she really did remember that much.

Two episodes in. Misty is the best.

For anyone who has finished the season and has read Born Again: Do you think the repeated instances of them saying Karen would never betray Matt are a nod to the comics and that she will actually betray Matt in season 3 or is it seeking to reassure the audience that she won't be the one betraying him? To me, it seems to be more the former than the latter. Dramatic irony and all that.

I don't think Karen will have anything to do with anything Born Again-y they do in S3. She was in a very different place in the comics story, with her betrayal being fueled by her drug addiction and all that. And, the iconic shot of Matt on the bed (which Defenders didn't even get right; I know Christ iconography is overdone, but it's pretty important in this case) came after the betrayal caused his downfall in the comic. They already tore her down with the Elektra nonsense, so it'd be weird to force that plot into S3 afterwards.

That's largely why I hate Matt being found by Maggie in the last scene. It's such a waste of an iconic moment that doesn't carry the same weight here as in Born Again.

You don't think that Matt's "death" could drive her over that edge and then when he comes back she's angry at him?

The edge of heroin addiction and pornography? Maybe they could have her take up some self-destructive habit while he's gone, but that'd be a very different story with little similarity to Born Again.

  12. I thought this was fun. The show was at its best when they were all together arguing or fighting. I really enjoyed the banter and the team dynamic. I don't mind Danny Rand. His naivete and whining play well off the other Defenders. I've cooled off on the solo seasons because of how dragged out they all get, but this reminded me of how much I like all those characters and got me excited again for new seasons.

Four or five days removed from finishing it and what has stuck with me most has been that I really missed Jessica and need S2 of her show ASAP.

  14. One of my favorite moments. Paraphrasing here, but Matt says, "I'm glad you guys are here." Jessica gives him the stink face. Luke says "...I'm not gonna hug you."

Jessica Jones was far and away the best part of this and I desperately need her season 2 ASAP

EDIT: lol didn't see someone else above said almost this exact same thing

  17. I don't know if it has been brought up but I was thinking about this show and suddenly I have a huge issue with it.

Based on events with Harold Mechem in Iron Fist how he can't die even when Ward murdered him what is the point of the Hand's whole quest. I feel like that really needed to be addressed.

    Any thoughts?

    Finished the first five episodes.
The first two really sucked. I almost stopped watching right there. But thankfully things picked up by the end of ep 3.

So on top of the reviews I did, I just put out a podcast episode on the show, too. Since the reviews were episode by episode, this is a better idea of my overall thoughts on the series. The Defenders

Thought this show had a bad start but from the end of ep3 and on it was fantastic. Kinda bummed it was only 8 episodes.
